I got back at 7:40. Kai was already dressed in a black tux with a crisp white dress shirt and a black tie. “You clean up nice,” I said, breezing past him on my way to the bedroom.

“I’m also quick,” he said, glancing at the time.

“So am I,” I promised. I closed the door behind me and tossed the garment bag on the bed. I’d had my hair washed and blown out at the salon, then, to save time, had my makeup done too. Picking out a dress hadn’t taken long. I’d gone with a sleeveless gown in watercolor chiffon fabric with a deep V neckline. I’d loved it in the store, and I was happy to see it looked just as good in the full-length mirror in my bedroom. I slipped into my own heels, ones I knew I could dance in, and was back in the kitchen by 7:45.

Kai glanced at me. I saw approval in his eyes, but all he said was, “You are quick.”

“I told you.” I glanced around. “Where do you keep your snacks?”

He raised an eyebrow. “My what?”

“You know. Your chips. Cookies. Secret stash of red licorice.”

I opened a cabinet door and found black lacquer plates. The next cabinet had the matching bowls. The next cabinet had serving ware. The next was empty.

Kai was watching me from the island. “You’re not getting warmer.”

I opened the pantry and found neat rows of whiskey glasses, wine glasses, champagne flutes, and martini glasses. I stared at them in fascination. How many glasses did one man need?

“There’s cut up fruit in the refrigerator,” Kai said. “And a vegetable platter.”

I opened it and found that he was correct. There was also a large pitcher of water and a bag of ground coffee, as well as pressed juices in the door, blocks of cheese in one of the drawers, smoked salmon in the other, and absolutely nothing else.

“Kai, where is your food?” I asked plaintively.

“In the various restaurants that I order it from,” he said flatly.

I pulled a few kiwi slices off the fruit platter and popped them in my mouth, unable to take my eyes off the sparkling clean refrigerator. “You never eat at home?”

“Sometimes I have it delivered,” he said. “But no. I don’t cook.”

“What’s on our schedule tomorrow?”

“Not grocery shopping, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“That is exactly what I’m thinking.”

“Then I’m busy.”

“With what?”

“Church.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Kai was the last person I expected to ever see in a church. “Come on. I’ll show you how.”

“I know how to grocery shop, Emilia,” he said with a hint of irritation. “I just don’t want to. I don’t have the time or the inclination to cook.”

“Well I do, and I’m here for the next four months,” I argued. “And also, it’s not cooking to pour some milk into a bowl of cereal or slap lunch meat on a piece of bread.”

His lip curled. “I don’t eat cereal. Do you know what’s in that shit?”

“Whole grains?” I guessed.

“Yeah, that and a shit ton of sugar.
