CHAPTER 29

“Sara?” Drake asked.

Sara had taken a wrong turn.

It had been so noisy downstairs, with people painting designs on onesies and all sorts of baby conversations going on.

All Sara heard Isobel say was second door…, then she’d waved her off.

I’ll find it, Sara had said. Famous last words.

Apparently it wasn’t the second door on the right, it was second door on the left.

“I… um…” Sara looked into Drake’s eyes.

She’d been thinking about him so much, she couldn’t believe she was actually seeing him in person.

He seemed just as surprised as she was. He looked like he was seeing a ghost. But then she was in the man’s bedroom.

It was tidy. She wasn’t sure what she expected, but she hadn’t expected such an… adult room.

It was a large room with French doors leading out to a balcony overlooking the backyard ponds.

The bed, covered in a blue and green plaid comforter, was made up. The nightstand held a reading lamp, a bottle of water and a paperback book turned upside down.

There was a large comfy looking chair over by the French doors.

A little writing desk on one side of the room and a dresser on the other. The writing desk had a pad of paper and a pen sitting next to an apple MacBook. Nothing else. The dresser, with a mirror on the wall behind it, held a leather tray and a little stack of paperback books.

“I was looking for the bathroom,” she said, one hand clutching the door knob.

“There’s one across the hall,” he said, his expression turning from shock to amusement. “Or you can use mine.” He pointed over his shoulder.

“I’ll go across the hall,” she quickly closed the door and dashed across the hall into the bathroom.

She closed the door and stood with her back against it.

She felt like she’d just run two miles. She took a deep, ragged breath. Then forced herself to keep breathing. Slow and deep.

It was just Drake. She’d known she might see him here.

But Isobel had said he was working today. Out in the field doing a survey and wasn’t expected back until sometime tonight. She’d said it in an offhand remark, to anyone who might be listening.

Sara planned to be flying back to Dallas by then.

She’d flown in this morning and Matthew had picked her up. She known it wasn’t Drake the minute she saw the BMW SUV sitting in the parking lot.

Drake drove trucks – old and new.

They hadn’t told Drake that she coming then.

She hadn’t asked them not to. It just seemed so… silly.

Especially when she wanted to see him.

But wanting to see him and thinking that it was a good idea to see him were two different things entirely.

She was trying to be smart.

To protect her heart.

She liked Drake, but any kind of relationship with him was impossible.

She’d only come to the baby shower because she worked with Isobel. And Tara had called her.

Tara was very convincing.

No one could tell Tara no.

Finished up in the bathroom, she opened the door, prepared to dart back downstairs into the baby shower fray.
