Chapter Nine

The entire drive back to Daniel’s was done in complete silence. Julian couldn’t bring himself to say a single word, he was so mad. It was as if Daniel had no concern for his own wellbeing. He could have been killed. Death was final. Was Daniel’s obsession with his friend’s murder overriding his own self-preservation?

When they found the decrepit barn in the woods, Julian instantly could smell the strong stench of vampires. There were several by the smell of it. Julian had been worried for Daniel’s safety, but felt the human had good enough sense to follow an order and stay put.

Inside the barn, they’d found at least nine vamps sleeping on the top level of the barn. Jeremy kicked out one of the supporting beams to the upper floor. The floor gave way and the vampires either fell or leapt to the ground. Fighting had broken out almost immediately. Julian hadn’t been worried, though. The vamps looked freshly made. They had no real fighting coordination, as if they weren’t used to their newfound strength. But he had to give it to them. They fought like animals, doing everything they could to survive.

Julian was in the middle of battling two vampires when he’d heard Daniel’s cry for help. His lack of focus got him a set of claws slashed across his chest. Julian had continued to fight the vampires and called out to Damon to go and help Daniel.

Julian’s pulse rate didn’t calm down until he saw with his own two eyes that Daniel wasn’t harmed and was safe. That joy was short-lived, though. Julian had never been so angry in his whole life, and he couldn’t figure out why. Daniel was just a man he found attractive. They had no ties to one another, yet Julian thought he might actually die if he lost Daniel. It was so bizarre.

Daniel’s house came into view and Julian parked his car in the driveway. Daniel didn’t say a word, just jumped from the car and stomped his way to the front door. Julian could see his human was pouting, but that was tough. Daniel would just have to deal with it. Julian had given him the chance to go on a hunt, but Daniel blew it by almost getting himself killed.

“You don’t have to stay.” Daniel swung the front door shut as he stepped through, but Julian caught the heavy wood with his hand easily and pushed it back open and stepped inside.

“I know I don’t, but I’m not done with you yet.” Julian slammed the door so hard the whole house shook. “Explain to me what was so hard for you to understand about staying put.”

“I did!” Daniel turned to face him, his face pinched in anger, and Julian almost found the show of defiance on his face handsome. Almost. “I saw one getting away, so I went after him to stop him.”

“And what did you think you would do if you did catch him? Hmm?” Julian crossed his arms over his chest.
