Chapter Six

The convention hall was packed. Jonan hated crowds, but his two days off conspired to put him in the middle of heavily traveled areas. His choice to attend the largest technology event of the year had something to do with it, but right now, he’d rather not think of that.

He preferred order. Spaceships had weight limits, maximum occupancy that, if ignored, left the crew gasping for air. This was chaos. Too many people made everyone vulnerable. If he pulled out a blaster, he’d kill a lot, but as the rush for the door began, they’d trample over the fallen and kill each other to escape.

Jonan stepped closer to Eli, determined to protect him if the worst happened. Something primal lurked inside. It needed to protect his mate. He’d never heard of an unmated couple having this strong of a bond without sharing blood.

Eli fidgeted next to him. His dark pants clung to his body like a second skin. Eyes watched him despite the oversized tunic with the hood pulled down to his nose. He crept across the floor like a cat prowling. While not meant to be seductive, Eli couldn’t hide from the wandering eyes. Jonan resisted the need to pull him close to remind Eli, who he belonged to. The only thing that kept him from ramming into his mate, regardless of the eyes that would watch them, was Eli’s lack of trying. He was doing everything possible to become invisible, but he resonated a strong energy that attracted others, and with his sexy body, he was irresistible. Still, his shy mate tried to hide. If Jonan asked, Eli would deny it, while peeking out beneath his hood, but the truth stood out like a naked man in a nunnery.

The clues couldn’t be ignored. Everyone at the technology event possessed a personal computer, except the person standing next to him. No one survived without one. The small portable devices accessed money, ordered food, set up transportation, held maps, and so much more. At times, Eli scratched his wrist in a gesture used to communicate with a device only to freeze when he realized there was none.

When Eli had pushed him into the elevator, there had been fear mixed with the desire. Neither of them could fight the attraction, but trust still needed to be earned. Jonan knew with some work, he could force the truth, but that might push Eli further away.

Jonan glanced at the table of personal computers. He never gave any of his previous lovers a present. Eli wasn’t just a lover, but his mate. He could almost see the light fill Eli’s hazel eyes as he strapped on a new device. When he turned toward his mate, the man was gone. He blinked, but his mate didn’t magically reappear. Fear turned his blood cold. Jonan scanned the area and saw a darkly dressed man slink toward the side. No one but him watched the sly figure maneuver through the mass of people, and if Jonan hadn’t been looking for him, then he would’ve missed him, too.
