EVE HAD THE strangest dream that night. She was back at her bedroom window staring down at her father as he climbed into the front seat beside Nadine Crosby. But when the figure in the back seat glanced up at her, Denton Crosby’s nebulous features morphed into Wayne Brody’s. He grinned, lifting a finger to his lips and then across his throat.

She awakened in a cold sweat, unsure of whether a noise or the dream had roused her. Staring up at the ceiling, she willed herself back to a calmer place before another sound catapulted her upright in bed. She reached for her weapon as she rose, then padded to the window to glance out at the garden.

Searching through the shadows, she let her gaze rest for a moment on the back-and-forth movement of the swing. Had the rattle of the chains awakened her? There was only a mild breeze, not enough to set the swing in motion. Someone was out there. She knew it with a certainty that bordered on premonition.

Be careful, Boo.

She glanced over her shoulder, almost expecting to find a silhouette lurking in a corner of her bedroom. She swept the room and then turned back to the window. She could see someone in the shadows just beyond the swing. The same interloper she’d spied outside her bedroom window all those years ago? Or was she imagining an intruder?

Hiding behind the linen curtains, she watched the shadow for another moment and then slipped across the room and out into the hallway. She didn’t turn on the light. Moonlight shimmering in through the windows guided her through the silent house. She paused at the back door to peer through the glass panel. Then she let herself out, closing the door behind her with a soft click. She hid among the trees and bushes, maneuvering soundlessly through the vegetation so that she could come up behind the swing. If someone was there, she hoped to catch him unawares.

The breeze lifted her hair and teased through the thin cotton of her pajamas. Eve pressed the Glock against her thigh, trying to convince herself she’d overreacted to a shadow even as her instincts warned of danger. A cloud passed over the moon, throwing the yard into pitch-blackness. Somewhere behind her, she heard the telltale snap of a twig. She whirled, shifting her weight automatically as she lifted her weapon. “Who’s there?”

“Evie?”

She drew a sharp breath. For one paralyzing moment, she could have sworn Gabriel Jareau had returned from the dead—or from wherever he’d been the past twenty-eight years. In the next instant, the visitor laughed, a low, menacing sound that prickled the hair at the back of her neck.

“Who are you?” The laugh had come from her left. She turned toward the sound. “Come out where I can see you.”

“I can’t do that, Evie.”

She used both hands to steady her weapon. “Show yourself.”

“It’s been a long time. You wouldn’t recognize me, kiddo. But I’d know you anywhere.”

“You’re not my dad.
