The ballroom buzzed with voices, laughter, and the strains of jazz music when I entered. Was it my imagination or did the room quiet just a bit as I walked in? I sensed that people had been talking about me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mrs. Rothmore making a beeline for me across the floor.
I ignored her as I looked around for Steve. He was nowhere to be seen. I craned my neck toward the open French doors that led to the balcony, trying to get a glimpse of him. Was he waiting out there for me? But no, there was no one out there but the housekeeper (María?) relighting some candles.
Then I spotted him. Steve. He was out on the dance floor.
With Claire.
My heart stopped. The room grew dim for a moment, then came back into focus.
They were dancing. She had her thin, tanned arms draped around his neck. They looked like Barbie and Ken out there—a perfect couple. A couple who belonged together. I couldn’t see his face, but she was lit-up, glowing. All teeth and bright eyes and shiny blonde hair. He was holding her close. Too close. I could picture his erection pressing against her belly, just as it always did with mine.
Stop, Ariella! Don’t go there!
Despite myself, I couldn’t take my eyes off what I didn’t want to see. My heart pounded dully in my chest. My mouth was dry, parched. I stared at the two of them, the sounds of voices falling off around me, replaced by a dull roar in my ears.
I heard someone titter. What were people thinking? Was everyone watching me? I was afraid to look.
Claire pressed her chest against Steve’s, grinning up at him. Perky tits in a low-cut dress. Two round, perfectly symmetrical balls bolted onto her narrow chest. Steve didn’t pull away as he should have. What is he doing? Instead, they continued to dance, moving in slow circles. The lead singer crooned a love song, something about forever and a day.
As I watched them, my heart slowly dropped to the floor. I was the outsider looking in. I was the laughing stock. Steve was dancing with another woman at our engagement party. The woman his mother wanted for him . . . and by the looks of it, the one he wanted, too. Maybe it was true. Maybe he had only been using me to get back at his parents.
He wasn’t who I thought he was.
Claire’s eyes caught mine as I stood by the edge of the dance floor, my heart pounding and mind reeling. She smirked, then slid her eyes back to Steve. She stroked her hands up his back as if to say, “He’s mine, now.” Then she reached up and pulled his head down for a kiss. Their lips touched.
I turned and ran.
