Chapter Eleven

Pia

“What time will he be here?” my assistant asked, trying to shuffle Vela’s backpack contents back into the bag. It was always a magic trick if everything that came out of that carriable disaster zone fit back inside.

She asked just as I went into the kitchen pantry, so when I came out, I jumped right back into the conversation with an answer. “He just said after work. You know my brother, though. That could be in twenty minutes or two hours.”

“Are you sure you don’t want me to whip something up for dinner?” the young girl offered. “I don’t mind, really, and Miss Judy canceled piano again.”

“Nah, he said he had a late lunch. My nerves are so bad, I don’t think I could eat a thing.” I grimaced and clutched my upset stomach. Anytime I was overly anxious, my tender stomach was the first to suffer.

“Well, I don’t need to nag you, but I’m going to.” Wren smiled warmly. “Please don’t skip the meal altogether.”

Giving her a quick side hug, I quipped, “Yes, dear.” It was touching that she worried about my health on top of everything else she did in my house. “Jacob surprised me with lunch at the office today,” I threw in at the end of our quick embrace.

She set me back by an arm’s length but still clutched my hands. “Really? Do you want to tell me more about it?”

Here was another amazing attribute of my friend. She never pried or injected herself into matters she wasn’t invited into or that didn’t concern her.

“How am I so lucky to have you in my life?” I asked her first.

“What brought that on? I mean, thank you, I feel pretty darn lucky to be a part of your life, too.” Then a shudder wracked her entire body before she said, “I can’t imagine where I’d be right now without you.”

“Please know I mean that from my heart. I wasn’t saying that to force you to shower me with gratitude.”

“Pia.” She just stared at me.

Finally, I said, “What?”

“We know each other better than that, don’t we?”

I answered while nodding, “I’d like to think so, yes.”

“Okay, good. Now, stop beating around the bush and tell me all the things about your lunch date.”

“You had a date? With who? With my father?” Vela appeared seemingly out of the ether.

“Oh, here we go,” I muttered and dropped my face into my palms. I didn’t want to tell my daughter about seeing Jake today and get her hopes up that things were on some sort of fast track with the man or have her pissed that she wasn’t included. The latter was the stronger possibility.

My daughter peppered me with questions. “Mama? Did you see Jacob today? How is he doing? Is he coming over? Does he want to see me too?”

“Darling, yes, I saw Jacob today. I’m sure at some point he will come see you again. Probably soon.” I added that last part because her little face was falling into crushed-heart territory with every word I carefully uttered.
