“Hmm, do you know any men interested in perpetuating their genetic heritage?” Denise asked.

No, he didn’t, but he knew a naive but lovely woman bent on driving him crazy.

“It’s a mystery to me,” he said. And it would remain a mystery to the rest of Renewal if he could help it. If he marched down to the bookstore now, Denise would figure out who the mystery writer was. People would hound Victoria, maybe even pity her or laugh at her.

So, no, he wouldn’t do that. But he would see her soon. Oh, yes, he would. Visitation negotiable? The very thought of one of these guys showing up after the fact and insinuating himself into her life made Caleb see raging red. What on earth was she thinking?

“Wonder what would make a woman resort to a personal ad to get a daddy for her babies,” Denise said.

Caleb blew out a breath. “I imagine she’s met a lot of losers in her time and she figures she’s better off with a loser she knows for sure won’t stay around than one who makes promises he doesn’t keep. Obviously she doesn’t want a husband.”

“Yeah, but why not just ask for the guy to donate sperm for a fee?”

He shrugged. “A guy hard up enough to donate sperm for money might be noble or he might just be a guy who’s figured out an easy way to get cash. Might be a con man that knows how to pretend. She might not trust herself to know the difference, and she might not want to have a con artist fathering her child. Maybe she’s looking for the right type.”

“There’s a right type?”

“I guess. She must have decided she at least wanted a man who liked children, who wasn’t in it just for the money. Someone with a higher motivation.”

“Maybe. Sounds fishy to me. Maybe she’s just looking for a roll in the hay or something kinky.”

“She is not looking for a roll in the hay.” The words came out a bit too hard and rough. Caleb realized he’d made a mistake. He searched for a way to make this right. “A woman who insists that the man be free of vices isn’t looking for titillation, definitely nothing kinky.”

Denise looked at him hard. She pushed her glasses up on her nose. “Could be you’re right. You probably know more about women than I do, given your vast experience. But if I were her, I’d be careful. Most men don’t have your background. Some of them are going to jump to the wrong conclusions. And inviting the guy to show up sometime later to see the kid, that’s just…”

“Unthinkable,” Caleb said beneath his breath.

“I was going to say unwise.
