Continuing south is Caesarea ™ [map] (daily 8am–4pm, until 5pm Mar–Sept). Although its greatest historical importance was as a Roman colony, it is the Crusader ruins that really catch the eye here. Enter the Crusader City through a vaulted gatehouse and bridge over a wide moat. The walls around the city, which slope down precipitously from an imposing height, are perhaps the most awe-inspiring monument. Along the waterfront, Roman pillars were used as foundation stones by the Crusaders and jut out among the waves. There is also a Byzantine street of statues and the restored Roman Amphitheater, a stirring venue for concerts overlooking the Mediterranean. Inland from the ruins is one of the few golf courses in Israel.
The only remarkable thing about the city of Khadera, just south of Caesarea is its huge power station on the coast. At least the electricity company can take credit for cleaning up the River Khadera and planting an attractive parkland along its banks, south of the power station. South of Khadera is Mikhmoret Beach, beautiful and seldom crowded. Here you can find sandy coves to nestle in and extraordinary sunsets to gaze upon from atop the cliffs. If you are really lucky you might stumble across the local population of large sea turtles.
Several kilometers further south is Netanya # [map], the capital city of the Sharon region. Founded as a citrus colony in 1929, Netanya has really blossomed since, if you’ll excuse the pun. It has an attractive beach and promenade, including a striking glass elevator down to the beach just south of the city center to help the elderly and disabled negotiate the high cliffs. Netanya has a population of 240,000 and a galaxy of budget-priced hotels clustered along the beachfront. The Tourist Information Office (Sun–Thu 9am–5pm) is in Independence Square near the seafront.
