Chapter 14
JOE TRIED not to jostle Nathan as he leaned forward to toss a script onto Nathan’s coffee table. It joined four others. Nathan had drifted off while Joe flipped through the second script, with his head nestled on Joe’s knee and Joe absently stroking his hair. Joe liked Nathan’s hair. Each strand was thin and fine and felt like silk when Joe slid his fingers through.
“Hmm.” Nathan shifted. “You find your next job yet?”
“Action, action, action,” Joe said. “Thought I might take some time off instead of jumping straight into something.”
“We could go out.” Nathan sat up and put his arm over Joe’s shoulders. “There’s a nice place not too far.”
Joe leaned forward, away from Nathan’s arm. “I’d rather stay in. I like this domestic thing we’ve got going.”
Nathan’s sigh was the opposite of content. “I guess I’d appreciate it more if we left the apartment, ever. We’ve never gone out. You’ve never even invited me over to your apartment.”
“It would be hard for me to deny being gay if someone saw you coming out of my place with bedhead,” Joe said. He forced a chuckle as if that would lighten the mood.
“I don’t understand. You could say the same thing about you leaving here.”
“It’s not the same,” Joe said.
What he didn’t say was Derek won’t accidentally see you if we’re always here. That wasn’t a problem anymore because Derek had stopped coming over. It was his own damn fault that he kept acting like there was still a chance Derek would pop over and see Nathan taking a walk of shame down Joe’s hall.
“Okay, but explain to me how that translates into us being held hostage by the limits of online delivery.”
Joe feigned shock. “There are no limits to online delivery. How dare you.”
Nathan carefully straddled Joe. He was fully dressed, and his belt pushed against Joe’s belly as he settled into Joe’s lap. “I want to go out with you to a place where they serve food. It could be fast food. A drive-thru window. At this point, I don’t care.”
“Nathan—”
“You never minded going out with Derek.”
And there it was. Derek. “I wasn’t dating Derek.”
“Everyone thinks you were and are dating him. Hell, I even thought you were.”
“Everyone?”
“You see something enough times…,” Nathan said.
“What are you talking about?”
“It’s been an open secret for years that you guys are together. You honestly didn’t know?”
Nathan sounded as if it had never occurred to him that he might be the first person to tell Joe that the whole fucking world thought Joe and Derek were an item.
“The night I gave you a ride when you locked yourself out of your car, you thought I was going to hit you when you touched my hand, and now you’re telling me that there’s an ancient rumor about me and Derek being together?”
Nathan smiled with bemusement. “Yep.”
“Oh.”
It was a strange conversation to have with Nathan on his lap, but Nathan showed no signs of moving, and Joe’s hands stayed on Nathan’s hips as if keeping him there.
