Coal and the Environment

In an assessment of the impact of the geosciences on critical energy resources, the impact of geology on certain environmental problems may be equally as substantial as it will be in estimating recoverable reserves, coal mining or utilization of coal.

Underground mine operations must deal with problems of surface subsidence, proper disposal of mine wastes and refuse, and potential problems of disturbance or pollution of ground or surface waters. Surface mine operations face many of the same problems plus the problem of more extensive disturbing of land surface and soil.

Geosciences can provide information necessary for disposal of solid wastes from mining or utilization of coal in an environmentally acceptable manner by determining the characteristics of the wastes and identification of adequate disposal sites. Geoscientific data are needed in solving problems of disposal of liquid or gaseous wastes. The occurrence and forms of sulfur in coal and methods of reduction of sulfur in coal continue as major objects of geoscience research.
