Chapter Six

When Byron stirred from his unconsciousness, he felt like he’d been run over by a truck—several times. At first, he could hardly even move, but as seconds passed, he found himself recovering, and he soon managed to take in his current environment.

“What in the world is happening?” he heard an unfamiliar male voice ask.

“I think he’s using astral projection,” another stranger—this time female—said.

“He’s doing something.”

Byron had no idea what they were referring to. He cracked his eyes open, his head spinning as he struggled to figure out what was going on. He had the foresight of staying down, which turned out to be a good idea, since a few moments later, he understood at least three-quarters of the situation.

King Sterling lay on the floor next to him, bound in chains, motionless. Through his advanced senses, Byron could tell the man was breathing—a very good thing. The presence of the other two people in the room identified a possible foe for Byron.

“What can he possibly do?” the man was asking now. “Kieve is dead. He acted just like we thought we would.”

“Obviously, he didn’t,” the woman replied fearfully. “Something’s wrong. I can feel it.”

“Breathe, my darling. Everything is as we planned it. Sterling cannot stop it, remember? We’ve already taken care of the threat from the shifter side.”

Or so he said, but even the man didn’t seem that convinced. The woman looked around wide-eyed, and in that moment, Byron realized his head wasn’t spinning after all. The ground itself was shaking, so much so that the two strangers stumbled and were forced to lean against the wall so as not to fall. The ceiling of the room cracked, but whatever power was attacking appeared to be intelligent as no actual rubble fell over them. Instead, the crack seemed to emanate a strange magic, one that engulfed Byron in a strange, warm embrace.

They’d clearly been taken prisoner, although it was a mystery why only Sterling had been tied down, while Byron had been left alone. Everything seemed so confusing. Byron loathed jumping into a situation without knowing what was going on, so he reached out to his mate, naturally seeking out Skylar.

That was when he realized it. His bond with Skylar was gone. He couldn’t feel his mate anymore, not like he had for over twenty years now.

These people, these monsters had done something to him. They’d done something to Skylar. They’d taken Skylar from him.

In his heart, Byron felt Skylar was still alive, but the absence of the bond struck him so badly he couldn’t even think anymore. His mind filled with nightmarish images, dreadful possibilities of his children being targeted as well.

Too easily, Byron could imagine them captured, tortured, Skylar’s beautiful body shattered by the evil of others. Red invaded his vision. With a roar, he shot to his feet. The only thing he knew was that these two were somehow connected to his loss.

The man barely got the chance to scream before Byron slashed his throat. He fell to the floor in front of Byron, gurgling, clutching his torn neck.
