Chapter Fifteen

“He said that?” Appearing surprised, Uncle Stanley held a bowl of mashed potatoes in his hand, neglecting to pass it around the table.

“Yes sir.” Jack nodded. “He’s representing the church. That’s why he was with them at the station the other day.”

“What did Alma say about that?” Aunt Sharon directed her question to Blue as she removed the potatoes from Stanley’s hand.

Blue wiped his mouth with a napkin. “She wasn’t happy.” He took a sip of iced tea. “I haven’t really talked to her about it. She had errands after church, and then we came on over here.”

“Well, I can’t imagine she’s gonna sit still on this.”

“No, ma’am.” Blue chuckled. “I’ve never seen her like she was today.”

“I have.” She smiled. “Your grandmother is a force to be reckoned with, and I, for one, am glad to have never been in her way when she’s let loose.”

“I didn’t know you knew her until the other day when Matthew—er, Mr. Wheeler came to the house with a bunch of old photos.”

Jack watched closely as Sharon’s brow arched. “Matthew brought photos?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Blue took another sip of tea. “Photos of my mom, him, and even you.”

“Humph.” A curious gleam flickered in Sharon’s eyes complementing her tentative smile. “From high school?”

Blue nodded. “A few. Haven’t really gone through the box yet.”

“I’d really like to see those. Maybe we can go through them together.”

“Sure. I’d like that.”

“You mom was a very nice girl.” Sharon smiled. “We met in elementary school, right after my family first moved to Danville from Baytown.”

“I saw a picture of you, my mom, Mr. Wheeler, and a man named Thomas Blueford.”

Blue’s cheeks flamed red, which was nothing compared to the fire burning Jack’s gut as he watched the guy he’d come to care about approach a subject so personal and important.

“I assume he’s who I’m named after.”

Jack squirmed. Blue looked so vulnerable. Had he bought into the rumors that this Blueford man was his father?

“I’m pretty sure. I know he and your mom were very close.”

“How close?”

A hush fell around the table, and everyone looked straight at Sharon, including Jack. He held his breath.

Sharon smiled. The same smile she offered Jack when they invited him to move the Danville. Caring and warm. Maternal. “Are you asking if Thomas is your father?”

Blue’s throat worked up and down as he stared across the table at Sharon. “Yes, ma’am.”

Sharon’s smile faded with a slight tilt of her head. “I honestly don’t know, Blue. We might have been friends, but your mom wasn’t one to over-share. She kept a lot of things to herself. She and Thomas spent a lot of time together though. Other than that, I really can’t say for sure.” She reached across, offering her hand.

Blue took it, his eyes glistening.

Jack wanted so badly to reach out to him, but he knew it wouldn’t help. Blue needed answers, not compassion. At least, not right now. He hadn’t really discussed the subject in depth, and Jack had never really asked. He figured Blue would bring it up if he wanted to talk about it more.
