Dani sits, stunned in awe as I spill the beans about everything. Hooking up in Shane’s office, the ‘proposal’ and all of its clauses and stipulations, signing the contract all wrapped up with essentially lying to my parents, my best friend, and the press as we plan on getting richer than our wildest dreams.

When I finally finish my tale, Danielle sits there, absolutely stunned. She looks down at her mojito and slams the rest of it back.

“What. The. Fuck, Sara?” she suddenly cries out. “Are you kidding me? This is so not you. The lying, the sleeping with your boss. None of that’s you. What’s gotten into you? Are you mad? Did Shane scoop your brains out and replace them with worms?”

I’m floored. I never knew my friend would react this way, and I instantly regret telling her. I never thought she’d react this harshly. We always had one another’s backs in college, even when we both knew we were wrong. This shouldn’t be any different, and I shock myself when I raise my voice in protest.

“I’m doing what’s best for me, Dani. I thought you’d be more supportive!”

“I’m trying, it’s just…it’s hard to see you do this to yourself. Everyone else can see how this is going to end. Bad, for you. Shane Lockwood is going to chew you up and spit you out, and it’s sad that you can’t see that for yourself.”

I cross my arms, trying my best not to scream at my best friend as she provokes me. “Everyone else? Who’s everyone else? Only a handful of people are privileged enough to know the truth, and I thought you’d be more appreciative of the fact that I’ve clued you in on what’s going on. It’s not even a real marriage, anyways.”

“It’s not? Well, you could’ve fooled me, the way you keep zoning out and dreaming about him. Does he know you feel this way?”

“Of course he does,” I lie. “And he feels the same way.”

“So you two are in love?”

I shake my head. “It’s more complicated than that, but it’s not a total lie.”

“And you’re still going to divorce after five years of swindling everyone?”

I hadn’t thought about that part, to be honest. In all actuality, I hadn’t thought about our lives that far ahead. Sure, Shane has the whole plan laid out for us, but…a part of me wants this to last forever, like a real marriage.

Suddenly, I get what Danielle’s saying. I’m blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, trading my fake fiancée persona for a potentially very real bridezilla.

I’m in too deep.

I sigh, and play with my drink straw while I stare down into my beverage.

“Dani, you’re right. I’m…I’m in over my head. I didn’t think this through, I’m sorry.”

Danielle is taken aback by my relinquishment of the argument, and leans forward, touching my arm. “Look, we’re best friends, you and me. I’ve got your back. I’ll help you get through this. And if you want to run away, move cities again? You know what? I’ll go with you.
