Chapter 12

Harlow suggested they head over to the church Jennifer had said she and Theo attended when he’d lived with her. Perhaps there would be someone around who remembered him and the camp that they sent low-income children to each year. More than anything, they were hoping to find someone who knew who Theo’s special friend was. Harlow wasn’t sure identifying that friend would turn out to be all that important, but it might, and she was curious.

It was Sunday and a service was in session when they arrived. According to the sign in front of the church, the service should be over at around noon. It was eleven twenty. Harlow and Coop sat in the car and discussed their options.

“We could just wait here until the service ends,” Harlow said. “Although I feel a bit like a stalker, and there is a good chance that folks will linger for a while. We could follow up with one of our other leads and then come back later. We might even want to call ahead and make an appointment with the pastor. If he wasn’t here when Theo was, he might still know who we should speak to.”

Coop pursed his lips. “I think that starting with the pastor and having him refer us to others if need be would be the best approach. We can call and leave a message on his voice mail. Hopefully, he will get it before he leaves the church and will call us back. What do you want to do in the meantime?”

“I was thinking we could head over to Baker Street. Jennifer didn’t know if Art was still there, but she did say he was young, and unless he moved on to other things, it’s possible he could still be there. If not, someone might know where we can find him.”

Coop nodded. “Okay. Pull up Baker Street Apartments on your map app. This is such a small town, I am assuming it is close by.”

The Baker Street Apartments were housed in a square building with a front entrance and interior hallways. The door was not locked, so they were able to walk right in. In the lobby, they paused, trying to decide where to start. It wasn’t like they could randomly start knocking on doors. Or perhaps they could, but they probably shouldn’t.

Coop walked over to a wall lined with mailboxes and studied the names and apartment numbers. “It looks like the building manager is in unit four.” He looked at her. “I guess we can start there.”

She nodded. “The car is parked in the shade, so Maggie should be fine for a few minutes, but let’s be quick.”

“Unit four should be at the end of this hallway.” Coop took her hand and headed in that direction.

The man who answered the door was pleasant, but he had only been in the building for about ten years. He did, however, know Art. Once they’d explained who they were and what they were after, he agreed to call Art on their behalf and inquire whether he was willing to speak to them.
