* * *

Stephen stood at the front of the chapel, his knee locking and unlocking. None of the usual platitudes eased his nerves. The last time he’d been in the family chapel, he’d been left at the altar. It was hard to forget that day, but he knew that Esme was entirely different. They were in love. God, so in love he didn’t know what to do with it all. And soon...in a few moments...she’d be walking down the aisle to him, and they would take their vows.

Will stood beside him and leaned over with advice. “Don’t pass out. Maman has just been ushered in.”

Stephen looked over his shoulder at Aurora, who smiled at him. Then he caught a glimpse of Christophe escorting Mary to her seat and he knew it was time. The ushers joined Stephen and Will at the front of the chapel and the vicar stepped forward.

The music changed.

Behind him, Anemone, Sophie, Charlotte and Bella made their way to the front, and he saw Phoebe take her place to his left. She smiled up at him, and he smiled back—he quite liked Phoebe. And then the music changed again, and there was an audible gasp from the guests. His pulse hammered as he imagined her stepping to the door...

“Oh, my God.” That was Will’s voice, and it was full of awe. “Stephen, she’s gorgeous.”

Stephen turned around and there she was. A vision in white lace, her veil trailing behind her, her fiery curls shining beneath the sheer fabric. His throat tightened as he realized she was wearing Maman’s wedding diamonds.

She was perfect. And she was walking toward him just this minute, a soft smile on her face, her green eyes alight with happiness and hope.

His miracle.

For the briefest moment, he was transported back nearly thirty years, waiting for her at the fort, happy when he saw her skipping along the path to meet him. They had come so far. Even then, she’d been the sunshine in his day. Now he’d have her for all of his days.

And as she reached the altar and he took her hand, he knew that his heart had finally come home.
