Chapter Nineteen

It was late by the time they made it back to Toronto. Overall, Ray would rate the trip a success, dinner discussion notwithstanding. Watching Elvin sing along to every song during the show and then fan-boy over Clarissa Davis was totally worth sitting through a musical. Elvin had been on cloud nine all the way home, and Ray almost forgot the concerns Elvin had raised during their meal.

Almost.

Good and bad. Right and wrong. So much of what he did occupied the space in between, and the murkiness had never bothered him. There was a whole class of people out there who did whatever the hell they wanted with no regard to rules or laws or propriety. And they happily got away with it too. The stuff Ray dabbled in was nothing in comparison.

But then, he came from a world where one’s character was defined more by dollar figures than anything else. Actions were only wrong if a person couldn’t buy their way out of trouble. Hell, he’d used that tactic himself whenever it suited him.

A car picked them up from the airport and its first stop was Elvin’s apartment. But when they got there, Elvin stared out the window, unmoved.

“Don’t want to go in?”

Elvin smiled. “How did you know?”

It wasn’t hard to tell. Ray had experienced the post-excitement drop in dopamine many times before. Coming back to reality could be a rough reentry. “Want to come to my place?”

Elvin nodded and Ray passed the instructions to the driver. When he settled back into his seat, Elvin snuggled up against him. It was the best feeling in the world.

Elvin didn’t grow up like Ray. He had parents who were around enough to raise him. He had a family who needed and depended on him. They lived in a world where the rules actually mattered and people were held accountable for their actions. They were normal. All the money in the world couldn’t buy that.

The car pulled up in front of Ray’s condo. After handing the driver a generous tip, Ray led Elvin inside.

“Hey, Mohammad,” Ray called to the security guard.

“Good evening, Mr. Chao, Mr. Goh.”

Hand in hand, they rode the elevator up to the penthouse and then walked wordlessly to Ray’s bedroom.

Elvin ran a hand over Ray’s bed before sitting on the edge. He looked at Ray, eyes half-lidded from a full day of activities.

“Good day?”

“Mmm-hmm.” Elvin gazed up at him with a soft smile. “It was.” He held out his hand, and Ray took it. “Thank you.”

“Of course.”

“Let’s not make a habit of it, though, okay?” Elvin gave him a tug to bring him nearer. “Impromptu jaunts to foreign cities are a little too rich for my blood.”

“You’ll get used to it.”

Elvin shot him a scolding look and Ray chuckled. Spoiling Elvin was fun, all the more so because Elvin never took it for granted.

Elvin bent his head and ran his fingers delicately over Ray’s hand, examining each knuckle and wrinkle. There was nothing erotic about it and yet Ray’s dick perked to attention.
