Chapter 8

Matty watched Quaid as he slumbered. He didn’t really think Quaid was out cold, rather just relaxing in the shade, his head cradled in Matty’s lap. And how that happened, Matty had no idea. One moment they had been eating, and the next moment Quaid’s head was in his lap.

Matty didn’t have the heart to protest, mainly because Quaid had seemed so comfortable there, a deep sigh falling from his lips right before his eyes closed. There was also the fact that Matty liked Quaid right where he was.

He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was attracted to Quaid. Who wouldn’t be? Quaid was a walking, talking sexual dream. Matty just didn’t know if he could trust the words Quaid gave him.

Matty frowned as a sudden thought came to him. He had initially said he wouldn’t sleep with Quaid because he didn’t want the man to run as soon as it was over. In his experience, which wasn’t much, men were after just one thing, and they split when they got what they wanted.

If he took that one thing out of the picture…

“Quaid?” Matty whispered.

“Yes, angel?”

Matty smiled. He knew the man wasn’t sleeping. “Make love to

me, Quaid.” Quaid’s eyes snapped open and stared up at him. They were filled with shock. “What?”

“You heard me.”

“No, angel, I’m not sure I did.”

“I want to have sex.”

Matty thought that Quaid would be all for it. He didn’t expect the man to frown and roll over, pushing himself into a sitting position.

“Why?”

“Why?” Matty squeaked. This wasn’t going quite the way he was thought it would. He expected Quaid to be all over him, not look at him in confusion.

“Yes, why?” Quaid repeated. “You’ve said over and over again that you won’t have sex to me. Why have you suddenly changed your mind?”

“You’re cute?”

“That’s not good enough, Matthew. I want to know why you suddenly changed your mind.”

“Don’t you want to have sex with me?” Maybe Quaid had changed his mind. Maybe Matty had been holding out too long and the man had finally given up. Matty was very confused, even more so when Quaid grabbed his hand and pushed against the hard erection in the man’s pants.

“I want you with every breath that I take, angel, but I refuse to do something that you’re not a hundred percent sure of.”

“I… I’m sure.”

Quaid’s lips turned down in a frown, and he sat back on his heels. “No, you’re not. If you were sure, Matthew, you wouldn’t be shaking at the thought of us having sex.”

Matty blinked several times as his face flushed. He hadn’t even realized he was shaking until Quaid said something. He dropped his head back to lean on the tree he was leaning against and tried to breathe calmly, something he wasn’t feeling at the moment.

“Why does this have to be so complicated?” he asked. He turned and looked at Quaid as the man settled on the ground next to him. He prayed that Quaid had the answers because he didn’t.
