Georgina had found – as usual, her meetings with Captain Edward Kelling confusing. How could anyone be that two-faced? Yet… he had undoubtedly done her grandfather a great deal of good. If she hadn’t heard him with her own ears condemning her care for him, she would have had difficulty believing he was so duplicitous. If, indeed, he had attacked her grandfather, he must be utterly brass-faced, to come and visit and play chess with him. Perhaps he had hit him from behind?

She had quite forgotten her violent dislike of him after the way he had conducted himself, and his polite handling of the matter of the thank-you note, and his solicitude. But, she had heard what she had heard.

Mr. Winter had in many ways not set her mind at ease in the least, she thought, crossly.

“M…miss Ross, unfortunately, there is not a great deal I can do about your relations,” he’d said. “M…my authority extends only as far as the estate, and Mr. Frederick’s other financial affairs – and they are complicated, he speculated in various things, but never to the detriment of his capital, and that really is the end of it.” He’d steepled his fingers. “The law – and this is not my f…field – might well side with you. You have not yet attained your majority, I believe, and would be unable to enter legal treaties of certain sorts without your guardian’s consent. I have had very little to do with this – but I do see that having a relative living with you, while your grandfather is incapacitated might be seen in a positive light in the district. Of course, you are your grandfather’s nearest blood relation as far as the law is concerned, and could it be demonstrated that your guardian was seriously impacting your ability to care for him – not allowing you to be here, for instance, when the Doctor has determined that is helping him a great deal, that could be the subject of a court appeal. But that would be long and arduous, and not really what Mr. W…Weatherly or you need. You are… how old now?”

She hadn’t even thought of her own birthday, let alone celebration thereof, for a long time. Her nineteenth had been while her father’s wounds were being tended, and there had been too much else happening. “I approach my twentieth year, sir.”

“At w…worst you have a year to tolerate it, Miss Ross.” He’d given his little prim smile. “I should think from my meeting of Mrs. Salmond’s older daughter, that they will tire of the exigencies of country life very rapidly.”

“They are going to be extremely expensive. Can I not get them to leave, or just leave Elvira with me, if I must have someone? I don’t want to be spending my grandfather’s money, and leave him without the means to support himself.”

Winter shook his head. “That is r…relatively unlikely. Your grandfather was… is of a frugal nature, but he is not unable to support this household.
