CHAPTER SIX

Dr. Joyce Reynolds turned out to be the kind of woman Keri could imagine as a "friend" of Ryan's. She was in her mid-to late thirties and had deep auburn hair coiled in a chignon at her nape; her patient-oriented manner seemed guaranteed to calm the most hysterical mother-to-be.

"Actually, I'm surprised that I would get a patient referral from Ryan." Joyce smiled warmly. For a moment she wondered if Ryan was the father but instantly dismissed that thought. She doubted this woman had ever been intimately involved with Ryan. So how had they met each other?

"Mr. Kincaid is one of my clients and knew that I was having trouble with my regular OB," Keri said quietly. "He suggested I see you."

Joyce's bright blue eyes sparkled with amusement. "Meaning he called and made the appointment?" She chuckled. "I think he has some bulldozer in him."

Keri shifted uncomfortably. Just how well did Ryan and this woman know each other?

"My husband and Ryan were fraternity brothers," Joyce explained. "To this day I can't understand how the college remained standing after some of their so-called pranks."

"It must have been difficult for you to go through medical school and keep up a marriage too," Keri speculated.

"It wasn't easy, but Jay was just the support I needed." Joyce folded her hands and placed them on her desk. "You're not going to like what I'm going to say." She paused. "Of course, nothing is official until I get the lab results and your paperwork from Dr. Chalmers's office, but my instincts are usually pretty correct."

"Why do I get the feeling that you're not going to tell me that I'm expecting twins?" Keri surmised wryly.

Dr. Reynolds smiled and shook her head. "I only wish that could be true."

Alarm flashed over Keri's face. "Is the baby—?"

Joyce hastened to soothe her fear. "The fetus is fine. The one I'm worried about is you. Your skin tone isn't good, you've already admitted that you tire very easily, you have high blood pressure and had a bad time with almost constant nausea until something was prescribed for you. I'd even hazard a guess that you're anemic. You're going to have to slow down, Keri, or be warned that you could lose your child."

Keri looked down at her clenched hands held rigidly in her lap. "None of this is deliberate," she whispered painfully. "I take my vitamins, I exercise, I do all that I'm supposed to."

Joyce's smile was faintly sad. "No matter how good you are, Keri, sometimes Mother Nature has different ideas. If you decide to continue under my care, I'll want you in here every week so I can monitor your blood pressure. I also would like to prescribe a different medication for your nausea, since you said that the one you're taking makes you drowsy."

Keri nodded, ready to agree to anything.

"There's one other thing," Joyce added sternly. "If I decide you'll need complete bed rest toward the end of your pregnancy, I'll expect you to obey my orders without any argument.
