1. Locate your barrel under a downspout and as close to the area you want to irrigate. Place your barrel on stable ground.

2. Install the spigot. (Tip: You can purchase kits that have a second spigot for filling watering cans.) Use Teflon tape at all threaded fittings for a tight seal. Attach the overflow tube. Install your overflow tube away from the foundation of your home.

3. Use a hacksaw to cut the downspout to length. Connect the elbow fitting to the downspout using sheet-metal screws. Cover the top of the rain barrel. There are systems that have a cover made from wire mesh and the water is delivered directly though the mesh. Other system have an opening directly in the top of the barrel to gather the rain.

4. Attach the downspout to the rain barrel with flexible downspout extensions. Attach to the elbow and the barrel cover.

5. Connect the drip irrigation tube or garden hose to the spigot. A Y-fitting allows you to feed the drip irrigation system through a garden hose when the rain barrel is empty.

6. Increase water storage by connecting two or more rain barrels together. You can purchase a linking kit at home gardening stores.
