Chapter 20

Initially, I’d been nervous about attending Kesara’s family brunch. If I hadn’t known five of the family members, I probably would have declined her invitation. But from the moment I rang the bell, Kesara took hold of my elbow and pretty much stayed in contact until I felt comfortable enough with the people I’d met that she could let me out of her sight.

As if I hadn’t already guessed, they were a gregarious group. Affectionate, caring, considerate, and only ninety percent of them gaped at my size. Having gone through two plates of scrumptious Mexican delights, I settled onto a lawn chair to watch some of the smaller kids basically run after a soccer ball that very few of them actually kicked.

“Are you the one here with Kesara?” A man’s voice sounded from my left.

I turned to see a wall of four solid men, ranging in height from five-seven to five-ten. They had short to sheer short black hair and each one had a different facial hair covering, but there was no mistaking they were related. “She invited me, yes. I’m Graysen.”

“We’re Kesara’s brothers.”

“Oh,” I exclaimed, a smile forming as I moved to stand from my seat but didn’t make it before one of them stepped close enough that I might have bumped into him if I’d stood.

“We don’t care how much she likes you. If you hurt her like her last girlfriend, we’ll hurt you. That bitch nearly broke her, and we won’t let that happen again.”

So many thoughts slammed into my head I had a hard time working on only one. They were threatening me, in an overprotective brother sort of way, but still a threat. Kesara had been badly burned by a previous relationship. And most importantly, Kesara was a lesbian. My insides fluttered, either from their menacing tone or the knowledge that this good friend was like me. Well, she was probably better at being a lesbian, probably had a lot more practice than me, and more than likely enjoyed sex better than I did, but I shouldn’t be thinking about that. This was a family brunch and something else important was happening. Oh, yes, her brothers were threatening me.

“We’re serious about this,” the one with the sleek goatee insisted.

A laugh escaped before I could stop it. “How very cliché.” My lack of fear made them step closer as one unit. “Really, you’ll hurt me if I hurt her? What happens if she hurts me instead?”

“Get your own brother,” mustache brother told me. He made it sound like I could go out to Brothers-R-Us and pick one up anytime.

I hid my smile at that thought with a quirk of my lips. “I have one, but he understands that my private life is private, hence the use of the adjective.”

“That’s your problem.”

“No, it’s yours, and I’ll tell you why. I’ve known Kesara for a couple of months now. We’ve become good friends, but in all the time I’ve spent with her, she never once shared that she was a lesbian.
