I’m closing up the shop when a call comes through my phone. The name on my screen makes both my cheeks rise. “Hi, Grandma! I miss you.”

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Tessa, happy birthday to you.”

“Aww, you’re so cute. Thank you.”

“Hi, honey. How is your birthday going?”

“Good. I’m off work now, grabbing some pizza. I’m thinking of staying in.”

“Why all by yourself?”

“I don’t know. Sounds like something I need.” I walk around and shut off all the lights. June went home early, so I’m closing up by myself.

“Is everything okay, sweetie?”

“Yes, Grandma. Don’t worry. It sounds good to relax tonight.”

I've been wanting to try a pizza place a few blocks away. While walking toward there, I continue talking with my grandma and grandpa. My grandma put my grandpa on the phone, but he’s such a quiet man. He doesn’t say much, only I love you and miss you. I chuckle a lot when I talk to him. He’s a man of few words, but the sweetest man I have ever known. I end the call with my grandparents as I’m about to walk into the pizza place. My phone rings and it’s Ashley.

“Hi,” I say, waiting outside while I take her call.

“What are you doing? Are you off work?”

“Yeah, I’m off. About to pick up my dinner.”

“By yourself?”

Why does everyone think it’s weird to do stuff by yourself? “Yes.”

“I’m outside your place. I thought I could catch you before you were off.”

I turn back around and face the way I came as if I’m going to see her, but I’m too far to see anyone over there. “Do you want to have pizza with me?” I ask.

“No. Um...”

Why is she being so hesitant? “Um, what?”

“Can you just come over here? I want to get dinner with you, but I don’t feel like pizza. You know what? Stay where you are. I’m coming to get you.” She hangs up on me.

I let out a sigh. I really wanted a night to myself. Have a bottle of wine with pizza and take a bubble bath. That's something I haven't done in a while. I just realized I can't take a bath. My studio doesn’t have one. Sighing again, I lean my back against the wall, letting people pass by me.

I hear a honk and see Ashley pulled over in front of me. “Hi,” I say as I get into her car. She stays quiet and drives off. “Where are we going?” I look over at her. She’s gripping the steering wheel like she’s nervous about something.

“Can you just trust me?”

I give her a dead stare. “You know?”

“Know what?” she says.

“What today is?”

Both of her eyebrows rise. “What’s today?” she says, not facing me as she keeps her eyes on the road.

The rest of the drive to Cruz’s house is silent. I caught on to where she was taking me a couple of minutes into the drive. Maybe she really doesn’t know it’s my birthday. Are Ashley and Cruz going to discuss the argument June just had to tell them about? Oh great.
