Chapter 6: Caleb

I finished up with my dad, and it was okay at best. He sat down with me, and I remembered what he said.

“Caleb, once this is over, I’m going to leave this all to you,” he said.

“But what about your business?”

“Thing is, Caleb, I don’t want to do this. I’ve been trying to figure a way out. I discussed it with the suppliers, and they’re looking to bounce too. So we won’t’ need the MC. I’ll try to wipe your criminal record clear, which shouldn’t be a big issue, but once this is over, I’m leaving this place in your hands,” he said.

I thought about that. He was giving it to me. It’s like he knew deep down that I didn’t want to do this. But I wanted to talk to Mary about it. When I heard her voice, I waltzed in, seeing her there. She looked very tired and worn-out, but when she saw me, I could see the grin she had.

“There you are,” she said.

“Happy to see me?” I teased.

“You could say that. I’m just… I’m just happy that you’re alive and well,” she said.

“I feel the same way, Mary. So, how are you feeling?”

“Better. I could be worse.”

“You got that right. Things could be much worse,” I told her.

“Right. Anyways, how are things? Mom came in here to talk to me about the past. I don’t really know how to feel. I want to forgive her in order to move on, but I also don’t condone it. Especially since she tore the family apart,” she admitted.

“Yeah, I get that. Honestly though, she kept you safe. I remember when she was in a lot of fights with them, she’d come back battered and bruised. But she was always doing this in the hope that one day, by the stroke of good luck, she’d see you again. And she did. You’re her reason to live, Mary,” I said to her.

I could tell Mary was a bit shocked at that. I mean, I knew of her mom pretty well.

She nodded. “Thank you, Caleb. I … I’m happy to hear that.”

“Good. And honestly, I talked with my dad too. Things aren’t cordial between us, but we’re making it work as best as we can. I can tell that he doesn’t’ want to just do this anymore. He’s interested in pursuing his own thing. He was going to give everything to me, but his partners are pulling out. The ones in the drug business,” I explained.

“So does that mean…”

“Yeah. If I choose to, I can completely eliminate the drugs from this. I mean, it’s a gang war that spans years, almost decades. The thing is, I know my dad hates your dad, and he recruited Zephyr. Zephyr told me that she’d be fine with just running off and doing mercenary work after all of this is over. And I’d rather disband all of this. I don’t want to do that. My dad already agreed to help with education, and right now, I want to just live a normal life.
