Chapter Seven

Ross grimaced and hissed. Lifting his hand to his head, he felt around his forehead. After a couple of seconds, he grunted, finding the source of the pain. Just above his left eye was an impressive welt.

His sluggish brain churning, Ross tried to figure out what the hell had happened to him. He vaguely remembered Chieftain Goth’s orders...he’d traveled north, then he’d come to a steep mountainside. He’d left his horse tucked in a meadow some distance away, then started to climb.

What had happened after?

Ross forced his eyelids open. He blinked a few times in the dim light, trying to make out his surroundings. It appeared he was in a cave. The walls were stone. He lay on a shockingly comfortable pallet of blankets, furs, and pillows, and he caught the tell-tale flicker of a fire to his left.

Rolling on his side to face the heat source, Ross felt the dull ache in his channel. He clenched his chute and a bit of burn tingled through his arse. Ross froze as memories came rushing back.

He’d been climbing up the rock wall when he’d been startled by the arrival of someone behind him. He’d nearly fallen. The guy had saved him, then tossed him over his shoulder and carried him down the side of the mountain.

He’d introduced himself as Ziethman. He’d seduced Ross, interrogating him in the best way. Then, dragons had come and interrupted them. They’d bloody well spoken.

Ziethman had turned into a dragon!

Ross knew fleeing when Ziethman had expressly told him not to hadn’t been his finest moment. Sheep’s balls! He’d lost his head...and for good reason. What in his life had prepared him for a man turning into a dragon?

Vaguely, Ross remembered reaching his horse and galloping away. At some point, he’d heard his name called, and there, flying right beside them, had been a massive red dragon. Ziethman. Understandably, his horse had panicked. Ross remembered the pain of his forehead hitting the poll of his mare’s neck as it’d tossed its head before hopping and kicking.

Unfortunately, Ross had no idea how he’d gotten here...or even where here was.

“Good,” a deep voice called softly. “Ye’re awake.” A massive man in a black and green kilt strode into view. He had closely shorn hair on his head and a wide smile on his lips. He knelt beside Ross and told him earnestly, “We were getting worried about ye. Ye’ve been asleep for most of the day.”

“M-Most,” Ross began before pausing and swallowing around his thick tongue and dry throat.

“Here,” the man offered, holding out a rough-hewn wooden bowl. “Have a sip. It’s water.”

Without waiting for confirmation, the stranger slid his free arm under Ross’s shoulders and used the vee of his arm to cradle his head. With shocking strength, the guy lifted his torso up a bit and held the bowl to Ross’s lips.

“Drink,” he urged.

Ross obeyed, because what else could he do. He took a quick slurp of the water, then swallowed. The man continued to hold the bowl to his mouth and Ross slowly drank it all.
