Chapter Twenty-one

“Hey, it’s the private investigator,” Rhonda called out as Andi stepped into the shop. “How’s the investigation going?”

Andi grimaced. “I don’t think I should quit my day job.” She shrugged. “Well, if I had a day job, I wouldn’t quit it anyway.”

“Come on back. We were just about to send out for lunch.”

Andi saw a young man with long brown hair and a gangly young girl standing around Rhonda’s desk. “I didn’t mean to interrupt. I was in town and thought I’d drop by to see you.”

“You’re not interrupting. This is our weekly celebratory lunch.

Every Friday we celebrate the completion of yet another issue of the paper. Do you like pepperoni and mushrooms? That’s our poison of the day.”

Andi nodded and opened the gate on the walnut railing. “I’ve never met a pizza I didn’t like,” she teased.

“Good.” Rhonda handed the young man some bills. He and the girl nodded as they walked past Andi and disappeared out the front door.

“They’re a little short on manners, but they’re both good workers,” Rhonda said. “Kenny works miracles on that old press.”

“The girl looks young,” Andi said.

“She is. She works here during the afternoons as part of a school program. She gets extra credits for work experience and I get an additional pair of hands that I couldn’t afford otherwise.”

She nodded to a chair. “Have a seat and tell me what you’ve managed to uncover. They’ll be back soon.”

Andi sat down. “I don’t know anymore than I did. Mr. Acosta is out of town until sometime tomorrow and I couldn’t reach Mr.

Doleski. I did finally manage to talk to Janice Reed.”

Rhonda leaned back in her chair and smiled. “What did you think of our fine DA?”

Andi blushed as she recalled her humiliating outburst. “I kind of made a of fool of myself.”

Rhonda sat quietly.

Andi glanced at the photo that she had seen on her last visit, the one of Rhonda with her arm around the other woman.

Rhonda followed her gaze. “That’s Carol, my partner. We’ve been together eighteen years.”

“Congratulations.”

“What happened with Janice?”

Andi told her about her awkward outburst.

“Ouch. What did she say?”

Andi swallowed her embarrassment and hesitantly repeated Janice’s cavalier admission that she had been attracted to her when they first met.

Rhonda’s chair popped forward. “Janice Reed actually admitted that she was attracted to you?” she asked, her eyes wide with astonishment.

Andi nodded.

Rhonda stared at her. “Wow,” she whispered.

“What?” Andi asked.

Rhonda picked up her pen and began to spin it on the desk. She glanced back at Andi. “I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but 118

since practically everyone in town already knows, I guess it doesn’t matter. Janice had been an Assistant DA for several years when she decided to run for the DA’s position about six years ago. Her oppo-nent, the current DA then, began to play hardball. He started hinting there was something about Janice that he would reveal at an open forum. It seems Janice had come out to him when she began her career in his office.
