Chapter 21

Owen

Using a standard issue gym towel, I wipe away the sweat dripping down my face and then toss the towel in the dirty towel basket near the locker room door. Finn is right behind me, no doubt still eyeing me suspiciously after my violent session with the punching bag.

I pull my locker open, and my phone is vibrating loudly inside. I grab it off the bottom of the locker and shove it into my gym bag without looking at it.

“You going to answer that?” Finn asks, and I grunt in response.

I’m not going to answer it because I know it’s Liam, and I don’t have the first clue what to say to him. I should break things off now before he gets hurt even worse, but the thought of letting him go is like a lead weight in the pit of my stomach. I don’t understand how I can want him so much so quickly. No, not want, need.

“Hungry?” I ask, changing the subject.

“I could eat. Let me just send a text to my men that I won’t be home for a while.”

A text to his men. God that must be nice to have people waiting at home for you. As Finn smiles down at his phone, clearly enjoying messages from his partners, I think again about the polyamory conversation. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I can see the draw of having not one, but two people to love and share your life with. In fact, before everything went to shit five days ago, it had started to simmer into longing.

But now that’s all gone. I fucked up and hurt Liam, and all those happy things I was stupid enough to let myself want are dust in the wind.

“Okay, all set.” Finn sets his phone back down and starts changing out of his gym clothes back into his street clothes. “What are you in the mood to eat?”

“Whatever. You pick,” I grumble, pulling my shirt over my head and listening for my phone, unable to decide if I’m annoyed or relieved that Liam isn’t already calling again.

“What’s your deal?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you’re even pissier than usual today. What gives?”

I tug on my pants and then slip into my shoes before giving in to the urge to look at my phone. One missed call and one text from Liam are waiting.
