Parker nearly ran home, his heart beating so heavily in his chest that it was almost unbearable to breathe. While standing there with Rayne, Parker had been struck with a vision. It wasn’t something he could fully make out, but it had been real enough to terrify him. No, this couldn’t be happening. Parker knew that Mage came into their powers in their early years, but he had hoped that it hadn’t come at all. There wasn’t an exact science to when a Mage’s powers began to emerge. That’s what his mother and nanna had told him. Outside his family, Parker didn’t know any others like him so it wasn’t like he could go to anyone other than his family for advice.
When he reached the door, Parker fumbled with the keys, his hands shaking. He dropped the set three times before he finally managed to get inside. Nanna was standing in the living room, gazing at him, a sad smile on her beautiful face.
“It’s finally happening,” she said with regret. “I know you didn’t want this, but it’s time you faced your destiny.”
“My destiny is to work at The Pit, pays bills, and cry about being broke.” Parker fisted his keys, the teeth cutting into the palm of his hand. “Take it away, Nanna.” Never before had he been this terrified. Not even the night that truck had plowed into his car had been this devastating to Parker. “Please.”
She shook her head, the dark ringlets of hair bouncing. “I can’t. It’s in your blood.”
Parker moved toward the couch, crawled onto the worn cushions, and curled up, hugging his knees tightly. Now that his powers were emerging, he had to be very careful. Mage had a certain scent they gave off. Nanna had managed to move their family to an out-of-the-way location, deep in the woods where they couldn’t be discovered. Parker had foolishly thought that he would be fine. He’d even attended school in the neighboring town. That’s where he’d met his friend Leigh.
But he’d never brought Leigh home, nor did he hang out with him after school. When they graduated, Parker had talked Leigh into moving to Brac Village with him. His nanna had thrown a fit about Parker leaving the safety of their home, but his father had backed Parker up and he had won the argument.
Now it seemed he was going…no, he wasn’t moving back home. Parker was just going to have to be extremely careful. As far as they knew, the Southards were the last of their kind.
His parents worked from home, his nanna doing the same. Parker had hated living like hermits, so he had run as far and as fast as he could once he was done with school.
“I called Rayne.”
Parker sat up so fast that he became dizzy. He pressed the palm of his hand to the side of head, suppressing a moan. “You did what?” He didn’t mean to shout, but he was furious. “Why would you do that?”
The sympathy was gone from her face, replaced by a mask of stubborn determination.
