He rolled over on Arden saying she knew the items were stolen and that she had convinced her partner, Vincent Lambert, to get her the stolen artifacts. The Times described Lambert as her lover. That threw me. I wondered if he really was a switch-hitter, or, if this fact like many other things reported about him was a lie.

I wanted to ask Jean-Luc about Vincent’s sexuality but we didn’t have much time alone to talk. He had prepared an entirely new menu for Café Crème and he spent the evening stressing over the details. He had some wonderful ideas and I knew they would be a huge hit.

“Can’t I come for lunch the first day?” Kaia kept asking. She was nervous about her new school but she still had to go.

“No, you can come for dinner,” Jean-Luc promised her.

It was my turn to bathe and bed her. I let her pick the book she wanted to read. She read one of the Linnea books to me. As usual, I fell asleep beside her. I didn’t wake up until her little head snuggled close to mine. I waited until I knew she was asleep and stole back to my own room.

Jean-Luc lay across our bed, menus strewn everywhere.
