Mason watched as the small amount of color left in Sawyer’s face completely drained.

“What?” It came out in a ragged whisper, Sawyer’s voice quivering, his cheeks still wet with tears.

“Since you’ve been here, you’ve always called out Drew’s name during a nightmare, like you’re reliving the night you were hit.” Mason paused. “Tonight, you called out the name Liam.” Mason looked at Grant, seeing the encouragement he needed to continue. “You don’t have to hide who you are here, Sawyer. In Riverside Falls, but most importantly in this house. You’re safe here.” When Sawyer sat in stunned silence, Mason added, “You’re safe with us.”

Sawyer slightly nodded. “I know. Everything…everything in me is screaming to trust you.” He shifted his eyes to Grant. “Both of you. But every time I try…” His words trailed off as he took another deep, shuddering breath and shook his head.

“Is Liam who you’re running from? Did he hurt you?” Grant asked, and Sawyer visibly cringed. “You sounded so scared.”

“God, no. I would never—he never would have hurt me.” Sawyer dropped his watery gaze and gripped the sheet covering him from the waist down. “Liam…” He took a deep breath. “Liam was the love of my life, and I couldn’t stop them from hurting him.”

Mason took in a sharp breath and met Grant’s eyes, seeing the same concern reflected back. Was Liam dead? Jesus Christ, he hoped not. He didn’t want to ask, but a part of him knew this was something he and Grant needed to know to understand Sawyer better. Because, goddamn, he wanted to know him better. Wanted to keep him safe, but he didn’t know who to keep him safe from.

“Where is Liam?” Mason asked, holding his breath as he waited for the answer. Grant reached his hand across Sawyer’s stomach, and Mason took it willingly.

“He’s not…you know…?” Grant began, but he must have been as afraid of the answer as Mason because he didn’t finish the question. Instead, he squeezed Mason’s hand.

“I don’t know where he is,” Sawyer replied. Mason and Grant both heaved a sigh of relief that at least the man was alive. “After the attack, his parents convinced him to leave school. I haven’t seen or spoken to him since he left. I tried, but—” He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I tried. I’m sure seeing me was a reminder he didn’t want.”

The attack?

After they’d both seen Sawyer’s scar a few weeks ago, it was clear that something bad had happened, but to hear it from his mouth? The word attack fired from Sawyer like a bullet from a gun, right in the dead center of Mason’s chest. Mason was fucking gutted; pain, anger, and fear all fought for dominance as he stared at this amazing man who’d been through entirely too much in his twenty-eight years.

“Jesus, Sawyer,” Grant uttered. “I’m such an asshole. I should’ve seen it. Should’ve known that all that anger was coming from a place of fear.”

“You saw what I wanted you to see,” Sawyer retorted with a scowl.
