[Four weeks later]
REY grinned as he walked into the exam room with Mill; a
whole and healthy Tris waved from the patient’s chair. They
joined him, staying quiet until the nurse finished with the charts
and left them alone.
“How are you, Tris?” Mill asked solemnly. It was the first
time he’d gotten to see the captain since he was whisked away
right after they were rescued.
Tris extended his hand to Mill so the other man could see
the blue-tinged veins. “I’m still here,” he said to his friend.
”So now what? You’re all healed up, but you can’t touch
anyone?” Mill asked.
Tris shrugged. “All healed up with my own special little
version of Blue Stripes. Benefits included.” He waggled his
eyebrows from his place in the chair.
“Special version? Benefits?” Mill echoed, sitting down an
arm’s length him before looking to Rey, who leaned against the
wall.
“Health benefits,” Rey clarified. “Better vision, better
hearing, more efficient body functions – simply better. And
younger. It’s amazing.”
Tris smiled when Mill shook his head. “So what’s it mean?”
Rey leaned forward. “What it means is that Retter’s
mutated Blue Stripes can heal anyone of damn near anything. We
tested extensively. He even cures the original Blue Stripes.”
Mill stared at him in shock. “And these people who are
healed, they all become like Tris?”
Rey nodded. “And people like you, Mill, who aren’t hurt,
aren’t sick, if we expose you to Retter or to someone he’s
touched, you get your own version of human Blue Stripes
