Perseverance

Aunt Muriel is the belle that rings forever.

She must count seven decades anyhow,

Yet still maintains the airs of a glamour-puss

Of twenty-two. The years cannot dissever

Her graces from her. She makes a charming fuss

Over petty trifles. The men still scrape and bow,

She being the sexiest woman in the room.

Her face is lined but keeps its fine profile;

She lights a cigarette with cool finesse,

The naughty thing. She flashes a winning smile

And speaks in a gin contralto that seals our doom:

“This old rag? I’d hardly call it a dress—”

She acknowledges the compliments she draws

With practiced ease and prattles without stop,

Breathily breathless, silken as liquid soap.

She seems always to bow to silent applause.

We see through her but love her still because,

By the living God Who made her, she gives us hope.
