Chapter Nine

Enzo paced and growled in the confines of his room. He’d woken up with most of the furniture in the room missing. The bed was gone, with nothing left but the mattress, but the bar that had been above the bed was still in place. Enzo knew this because his chains had been attached to it, keeping him in place with his hands above his head.

It certainly explained why his wrists had hurt so much, and why he’d had so much trouble breathing when he woke up. His body weight was holding him down, but even when he came back to awareness and stood straight on his feet, there wasn’t enough slack in the chains for him to put his hands down.

Which was explained later when some vampires came in with whips in their hands.

Enzo growled as he thought back on his punishment. The fire-like burn of the lashes, how the vampires taunted him and laughed, but Enzo had refused to give in. He hadn’t screamed, and he hadn’t begged for them to stop. He’d just silently glared ahead, knowing in the pit of his stomach that somewhere in the house, the same thing was happening to Danny.

Danny was strong, but his strength came from the inside, not the outside. They would make sure he screamed, and they would taunt him and laugh until he cried and begged for them to stop.

After Enzo was released and left to prowl around his mostly empty room, the only thing left for him to do was wait for them to give his mate back to him, if that was their intention at all. He wanted Danny back in here where Enzo could see him, could hold and touch him and comfort him. It was his inner alpha that thought, on some strange level, that if he could just see how Danny was, and look the man over with his own eyes, that he would somehow be able to take away the pain of what had been done to him.

And Enzo wished for that. He wished that out of all of his abilities, taking away the pain of his mate was one of them.

It wasn’t, and Enzo still had to wait for when Danny was returned to him.

When the heavy lock on the other side of the door finally clicked and slid out of place, Enzo turned to stare at it, waiting for the damned thing to open.

It did, and Danny was shoved inside. He tripped over his feet and fell onto the floor, and Enzo rushed to his side, hating himself for being too late to catch him.

Danny was sniffling. The position he was in gave Enzo a good look at what had been done to his back, and he growled up at the vampires who’d carelessly thrown him inside.

Pietro wasn’t among them, which was a shame, but the man in red was there, and though his voice was cold, there was a slight note of sympathy in his eyes.

“Don’t you look at us like that, wolf,” said the red man.
