Chapter Ten

Ava

I’m waiting for Emmett to get out of the shower so we can go to the Helix Room for our demonstration class when my phone rings. It’s a San Jose number, and I debate whether to answer it. I wonder if a reporter has somehow tracked me down, but I’ve gone to great lengths to keep my number private, and I know Logan wouldn’t have given it out, so I have no idea who it could be. On a whim, I answer.

“Avalon Summers?” a man’s voice says on the other end of the line.

My heart trips a little faster. I shouldn’t have answered. “Who is this?”

“My name is Griffin Black. I’m CEO of Black Industries, and I’m calling to hopefully make you an offer you can’t refuse.”

“I’m not interested in talking to the press,” I say firmly.

I’m about to hang up when he stops me. “I assure you I’m not with the press. Although I’ve had enough run-ins with them myself to understand your viewpoint.” His warm laughter is unexpectedly reassuring. “Black Industries is a company focused on holistic alternative therapies that combine biotechnology with natural products to create life-transforming and life-saving medicines. We’ve been looking for a graphic designer to help us create and mold our brand. But we don’t want just anyone. We want someone who really understands our business, someone with a certain style who sees and embraces our vision and can carry it out. When I saw the logo for Castile Enterprises’ hotel line, I knew whoever drew that was who I wanted to hire. I tracked down who designed it, which led me to you.”

Before I can say anything, he begins filling me in on the company, which he says his family formed to make his father’s discovery of a plant-based treatment for cancer accessible to everyone, and the role he wants to hire me for. I’d be head of the design department, tasked with creating logos and visuals for all the products in the brand. It sounds like a dream job, but I’ve gotten my hopes up before, only to have them dashed by my stepfather. Now that I’ve defied him and broken our little “deal,” it will be a full-on war, and he’ll go to any lengths to strike back at me. Which is why I may be stuck at the Helix, regardless of my inability to be the submissive I’m supposed to be.

I figure I might as well address it now. “I appreciate your kind words, and the offer, but do you know who I am?”

He sighs heavily. “Yes. My wife Mila told me you’d never walk away from the fame you’ve found through The Power Games. I’d hoped she was wrong. Although that rarely happens. The hazards of marrying a lawyer,” he adds. Despite his words, I can hear his love for his wife in his voice.

“I don’t mean that,” I say. “Did you watch the news last night?”

“Oh. You mean your allegations against your stepfather, Senator Sanderson?”

Now it’s my turn to sigh.
