Maria de Padilla (d. 1362)

Mistress to Peter the Cruel. She was installed in the royal household, and her family obtained preferments. She died at age twenty-eight in 1362. Peter then claimed that they had been secretly married ten years before, and the nobles acknowledged the rights of their four children to succeed to the throne.

Maria de Ventadorn (b. c. 1165)

An important patron of the troubadours in Languedoc, France, she was herself a troubadour from Limousin. She married Viscount Ebles de Ventadorn as a teenager. Much troubadour activity flourished in the region. She was well known, highly regarded as both a poet and a hostess. Her poems are sophisticated examples of troubadour verse.

Her husband became a monk in 1221, and there is no further record of her.
