Chapter Eighteen
Luke let out a groan.
What was the woman thinking?
He pushed himself to his feet, suddenly feeling more alert. He had no choice but to be. As he staggered onto the porch, he spotted Harper standing by the lake, gun drawn, and her gaze jerking from left to right as she looked for the intruder.
No one else was in sight.
But Harper looked wired and ready to shoot anything that moved.
The night felt taut with tension, like nature had picked up on their fear and waited with bated breath to see what might happen.
“Harper,” he called.
She veered toward him, gun still drawn.
Luke sucked in a deep breath and walked toward her.
He wanted to reprimand her for being irresponsible. But the distress in her gaze silenced him.
The woman was terrified but determined to put an end to this.
Harper’s bones looked like they turned to jelly when she saw him, and she let out a cry. Luke caught her elbow before she collapsed to the ground.
“I thought I could catch him,” she whispered, her voice cracking as she rasped in shallow breaths.
“It’s okay, Harper.”
Tears pushed at her eyes, but she said nothing else. Luke’s heart ached when he saw her brutal determination. There were too many emotions on Harper’s face to fully comprehend them all. But he worried she might go into shock.
“Come on,” Luke said, glancing around one more time. “Let’s get you back inside.”
Harper didn’t argue as he led her into the cabin and to a couch. He flipped the lights on and glanced around before joining her.
“Are you okay?” Luke studied her face, unsure about everything that had played out here tonight.
She nodded, her face almost blank. But the telltale tears at the corners of her eyes made it clear she hadn’t checked out. No, she was feeling everything on an internal level.
“I’m going to make sure everything is clear. Okay?” Luke said the words slowly, trying to make sure she understood.
She nodded again.
Hesitantly, Luke stepped away and pulled out his phone. He needed his deputies here. He needed them to search for the man responsible. They needed to comb this place for evidence as well.
Luke didn’t have to go very far.
He paused by the bookshelf, where a basket of pinecones, a wood figure of a bear, and pictures from the mountains—landscape views, cozy cabins, a deer—stared back.
On the bottom shelf, there was a picture. A loose picture.
Of a family. A man and woman surrounded by seven kids. Slipping a glove on, Luke picked up the photo.
One of the faces had an X over it, crudely added with a red marker.
Luke would need to confirm with Harper, but he felt certain the picture was of Harper and her family.
