Rae blew out a long exhale when she entered the ladies’ room. Like the rest of the club, this room exuded class—black marble, shiny fixtures, and lit vanity mirrors. And to Rae’s approval, it was large with numerous full-door stalls. She hated those flimsy public bathroom doors with bottom cutouts and open slits on each side that anyone could see through. What was the point of having a door?

Taking her time in the relatively quiet bathroom with only a few other ladies coming in and out, Rae went to stand in front of a mirror to touch up her makeup. She didn’t care about her face, but she needed the time to recompose herself. Being with Dean and being introduced to numerous people who had come to their table made her acutely aware of their speculative stares.

They had been mostly cordial and courteous, but some—the women, especially—were covertly hostile. It could all be in her head. But she had the impression that Gayle Harris, one of Dean’s top executives and good friends, didn’t like her very much.

Rae had no basis to justify her feelings because Gayle seemed friendly enough. She asked questions about Rae’s work and was particularly interested in her connection with Canis Major. She’d claimed the social-media coverage of the Canis Major indie tour was one of the reasons her team had signed the band. But for some unspecified reason, Rae had felt Gayle had underplayed Rae’s role in it.

I don’t care. It had been her idea, and her audience had boosted Canis Major’s numbers. The boys knew, and that was all that mattered.

The main bathroom door opened, and a tall, long-limbed woman walked in. Rae locked eyes with the incoming woman in the mirror, and the other woman started toward her. Rae suppressed a groan and braced herself for unpleasantness.

“You’ve been in here for a while.” Fiona Underwood’s sickly sweet voice made Rae’s skin crawl. “We’re not making you uncomfortable, are we?”

Rae put away her compact and looked at the other woman with feigned confusion. Fiona definitely didn’t need to know she had a low tolerance for people like her. Her experience working for the glitzy rich on that superyacht in Italy had taught her how to deal with them. They were like any other people: Some were decent, others were dicks. Fiona fell into the latter category.

“Why ever would you think that?” Rae asked.

Fiona pulled out a Chanel lipstick and applied it to her pouty lips with precision.

“Oh, a few of Dean’s former dates didn’t exactly…” she paused for a dramatic effect, “fit in. It’s really not their fault. A man in Dean’s position needs a woman who can keep up with his lifestyle.”

“I see. And you think I don’t fit in?” Rae kept her voice amiable.

“It’s not really my place to say, is it? It’s more about, do you think you fit in?” Fiona’s eyes swept over Rae slowly down to her shoes and again to meet her eyes.

Wow. This woman is a viper. Though that might be an insult to real vipers.
