A new morning and another group of dragons. Derlin smiled as he remembered the previous night. Tyron had ended up leaving soon after Yelt did. The dragon rider had maneuvers in the morning and had to get up early.
Derlin had barely resisted inviting him into his bed. It was too early for sex with the hot dragon rider but damn if he wasn’t tempted.
Arriving at the stable he greeted the dragons with pats on the noses. A few swiped a lick of his hand. Derlin rubbed his fingers against his pants to dry them off after the third time. He guessed he must taste good to dragons. He wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.
After finishing two rows of stalls yesterday he grabbed his pail and headed for the far wall. A small silver dragon peeked his head over the stall. Derlin stepped back. He knew from experience that this particular breed spit acid.
“Hello there,” he cooed at it from a safe distance.
“You don’t need to groom that one,” Sir Lyret said behind him. He clamped one of his huge hands on Derlin’s shoulder and pulled him back even further. “Some stupid hunter brought him to us for training. Apparently he’s new and didn’t know about the acid. He had some pretty bad marks on him.”
“What are you going to do with him?” As far as Derlin knew they never rode the silvers. That particular breed didn’t take well to taming.
“Darned if I know. You can’t release him out in the wild and he’s too small to ride. Hell he’s probably gonna starve to death. After they got him in there they couldn’t get any food in his bowl. The handlers were too afraid.”
Derlin knew he couldn’t do anything with witnesses so he pretended to agree with Lyret’s assessment.
“I hope they figure something out soon. He’s a pretty thing.”
“Some of the beauties in nature are the deadliest.” The dragon rider gave Derlin a friendly slap on the back. “I’ll see you later boy, don’t let a dragon eat you.”
Laughing hysterically, the rider wandered off.
Derlin shook his head. He knew the knight thought he was telling a funny joke but Derlin was always careful. Just because a dragon would talk to you didn’t mean it would resist killing you if you got in its way.
I’ll come visit you later! Derlin sent the thought to the dragon.
The silvery scales reflected the morning light, sparkling like diamonds.
Hungry!
The beast’s hunger battered at Derlin’s mind. Strange. Usually he could keep them at bay. He glanced around and didn’t see any knights in the immediate proximity. Surely they wouldn’t know if fed the little creature.
Setting down his pail, Derlin went to the grain dispenser and filled up a feed bucket. Making sure the coast was clear he headed back to the silver dragon. A foot from the beast, a shout startled him.
“No!”
Derlin turned to see Tyron rushing over. “Stop!”
He put out a hand. If Tyron rushed the silver dragon the creature could instinctively spit.
