Reece rolled over in the bed and wrapped his arm around Abby’s waist. She wiggled her bottom against him, making a warm nest for his morning hard-on. His eagerness for a morning tumble was blatantly interrupted when the apartment buzzer sounded.

Once, twice. Followed by a prolonged ring as if someone was leaning on the blasted button.

He grabbed for his discarded shirt and stumbled into his jeans on his way across the living room. Depressing the intercom button, he growled a greeting. “Yeah, who is it?”

“Cal Spinner,” the anonymous voice responded. “I’m looking for Adam Wentworth.”

“And you are?” Reece prompted. He wanted a few seconds’ grace to assess their situation.

“I’m Mr. Wentworth’s bodyguard.”

Reece hit the button admitting Spinner inside the main door, and then slid his arms through the sleeves of his shirt as he made his way to Billy’s bedroom door. He was about to knock when the door opened and Adam stepped across the threshold, Billy close on his heels. Both men looked as if they were freshly showered and dressed for breakfast at the country club.

“It’s all good, Reece,” Billy explained. “Adam called for a ride.”

“You could have given me a heads up,” he groused. “I wasn’t sure what you wanted me to say.”

Adam’s smile was apologetic. “You’re right. Sorry. You don’t have to worry, though. Cal’s been my bodyguard for three years, ever since my father took office. He knows all my secrets.”

A firm knock sounded on the apartment door. His hand on the doorknob, Reece stopped short and turned back to Adam. Loud enough for both young men to hear, he told them, “I’m not concerned with what he knows about you. However, I am worried about him knowing Billy’s secrets.”

He took a quick, precautionary look through the security peephole. The man on the other side was tall with arms the size of battering rams. Reece opened the door and stepped back.

Cal Spinner took two long strides forward and stopped in the tiled entryway.

“He’ll be a minute,” Reece felt obliged to say.

“No hurry. He’s not due at the mansion for brunch until eleven.”

The mayor’s mansion. Right. The mayor’s son and the son of a known crime boss. This could go in no direction but south. Reece felt it in his gut.

He was saved from making any further small talk when Adam appeared at his side.

“Tell Abby good-bye for me,” Adam said. “I enjoyed meeting you both.”

Reece nodded. “Take care, kid. Maybe we’ll see you around again someday soon.”

Adam shrugged. “Maybe.”

Had things not gone great in paradise?

It was one thing to be cool with Billy’s choices, but he had no idea what he would say if Billy wanted to talk.

As concerned as he should be about Billy’s problems, he had one of his own to deal with at the moment. The last thing Reece wanted was for Billy to realize he and Abby had spent the night heating up the guest room. Especially if things hadn’t gone well between Billy and Adam.

Okay, truthfully, maybe Billy’s issues weren’t the biggest of his problems.
