Chapter Sixteen

DARK SKIES RUMBLED overhead as Larissa peered through the blinds for what had to be the hundredth time.

If she had a lick of sense, she’d call Shane right now and tell him not to come. It was a stupid idea to begin with. Things were working just fine as they were; why screw it up by getting involved?

Because being with Shane was like magic, said the voice inside her head that she wished would shut up. To make matters worse, a barrage of memories flooded her mind, reminding her of how amazing it had been and how incredible he’d made her feel.

So deep in her thoughts, she almost didn’t notice when her phone vibrated in her back pocket. Jerking to attention, she checked the screen and smiled at the sight of Austin’s number.

“Hey, what’s up?” she asked when she answered.

“Just finished up for the night. We’re on our way to the hotel.” He sounded tired, which made perfect sense considering he and his crew had left Orlando at daybreak to drive out to Tampa. One of their old clients from Atlanta, a reclusive former starlet, had recently relocated to the area. Hollywood may have forgotten her, but a stalker hadn’t, so they’d spent the day beefing up the security on a mansion she’d recently purchased along the coast. Tomorrow, they’d tie up any loose ends before heading back to Orlando.

“How did Nina do?” Larissa asked.

“Fine.” The way he said that one simple word made it clear things were anything but fine.

Curious, she propped the phone between her ear and shoulder. “All right, what happened?”

“Nothing. She’s just a pain in the ass.”

Larissa couldn’t stop from smiling. Under normal conditions, the two sniped at each other every chance they got. She could only imagine how they worked together without Larissa acting as a buffer. Beneath the snarky insults and banter, the chemistry between them was electric. “Why don’t you sleep with her already? You know you want to.”

“What? No, it’s not like that.” He sounded offended. “Even if it was, she’s my employee.”

Ah, so that’s what was holding him up. Probably holding Nina up as well.

“Technically, she’s my employee,” Larissa said. “Remember, I’m the one who hired her.”

“Yeah, but who cuts her checks?”

Well, there was that one minor detail. Although she and her brothers all held an ownership stake in the company, Austin was the CEO and owned a slight majority interest. While she tried to think of a way around that roadblock, the purr of an engine caught her attention. Her pulse jumped when she peered through the blinds and saw Shane’s Porsche pull into the driveway.

It’s just a visit, she reminded herself, even though she knew damn well that wasn’t the truth. If it was only a visit, she would have had him come over when Emma was still awake. She also wouldn’t have put on the blue blouse that showed a generous amount of cleavage.

“I’ve got to go. Shane just pulled up.”

“It’s nine o’clock,” Austin said.

“I know.”

The line went silent for a second or two.
