HAZEL
She loved it when Deacon cooked for her. Not only because she had zero talent in this area, but also because it felt like she was something special in his eyes.
Sam had always insisted on the traditional division of labor. To him, a womanâs place was in the kitchen, and sheâd take care of the children and the home. Heâd insisted she stay at home while he took care of the financial side of things.
Sheâd totally disagreed, because she very much wanted to work and earn her own money. But heâd been deaf to all arguments and had totally stonewalled on this subject.
When it came to sex, sheâd also come to know a completely different world with Deacon. Deacon took a lot of time for her, responded to her, and also did not insist on having sex when she was tired or not feeling well. Sam hadnât forced her to do anything either, but heâd often put a lot of emotional pressure on her to fulfill her duties, as heâd called it.
But maybe Deacon only treated her like that because they stood right at the beginning of a relationship, and it would change. After all, Sam hadnât pressured her from the start either.
Her stomach knotted as she caught herself thinking so negatively about Sam, how unfair she was to him. Heâd loved her and desired her and done everything he could to give her the perfect life.
âWhatâs wrong, babe?â Deacon asked with his infallible ability to read her mood.
There was no way she was going to tell him that sheâd compared him to Sam again. That much past was no good for a relationship. So she quickly searched for another topic.
âI should sell my car. Itâs not paid off yet, and I canât really afford it,â she muttered.
âWant me to help you?â
She shrugged. âSam bought it just before he died ... He wanted a van with enough space for all our kids â¦â
Deacon listened to it all patiently, like he did every time she felt the need to share. âIf itâs preventing you from living a good life ⦠Even if itâs just financially, you need to sell it. No matter how much you want to cling to it, that future can no longer happen. At least not in the way you imagined.â He cleared his throat, then took her hand. âAnd if you ever decide to have kids, you can buy whatever car is right for them. With all the latest bells and whistles. You two wouldnât have kept that car forever either.â
Hazel nodded. He was right. Sam had always bought the newest of the newest. At two years, the van would probably be too old for him now.
âWill you help me sell it?â she asked.
Thoughtfully, Deacon pursed his lips. âWhat do I get in return?â
âDo I have to pay for your help already?â she asked, mock-horrified.
Earnestly, Deacon nodded. âYes. I think there has to be at least one date in it.â
âOne date?â She could count on one hand how many dates sheâd been on in her life.
