THIS PLACE WAS worse than the motel.

He wasn’t sure who the hell had thought it was a good idea to buy a run-down cabin in the middle of the desert, but it hadn’t been a good one.

The floorboards protested with every step. Dust had congregated on every surface, and Riggs was pretty sure those were bullet holes in the wall.

“It’s not much, Karig, but it’ll do. This place isn’t on any map. Isla’s husband made sure of it.” Adan Sergeant took up more space in the dilapidated postapocalyptic kitchen than anyone else. At well over six-foot-six, the former sniper was not easy to hide. “We planned on fixing it up and moving out here, but Mazi insists on being part of every design decision, and so far, those decisions include a whole lot of pink, purple and glitter. No one will look for you here.”

The man was right. It wasn’t much, but all he needed was a place for him and Macie to keep a low profile for a couple days. Just long enough to get their bearings after nearly dying in the middle of the woods. Riggs pressed his thumb into a hole almost the size of this thumb. A sniper bullet. Something had happened here. Recently. “You’re married to Isla Vachs, one of Ford’s officers?”

“That’s the dream, man.” Adan slapped Riggs on the back, and he nearly coughed up a lung. “I’m sure you know what it’s like. The incessant waiting for the right time, the planning. Hell, I don’t even know if Mazi wants me as a dad.”

He caught sight of Macie crossing the hallway at the back of the cabin, and his entire system lit up in awareness. That was all he’d felt since they’d left the clinic. A connection as though his body knew exactly where she was at all times. He hadn’t ever felt that with his wife. Back when they’d gotten together, getting married had just felt like something they were supposed to do after dating for five years and some months. Both of their families had expected it, and neither of them had been getting any younger. Turned out, that wasn’t the best way to ensure a healthy marriage. It’d all started falling apart when he’d spent more time with his nose in Hazel’s case file than with his wife. Riggs had just...made her disappear. Long before the divorce. “Yeah. I know how that feels.”

“I’ve stashed some weapons under these floorboards and in the cabinets. Just in case.” Adan motioned to a few key locations. “Isla had me put in an alarm system, too. Anyone or anything comes onto this property you aren’t expecting, you’ll be prepared.”

“You expecting trouble?” He’d trusted BMPD’s newest recruit and his—whatever Isla Vachs was—with Macie’s life at her insistence, but how well did he really know these people? Protocol dictated local PD take jurisdiction on any crimes in the town boundaries. That didn’t mean they were on the up-and-up, and it didn’t mean they had any clue as to what they were doing.
