“How can I help?” She repeats the question, obviously aware that I’m not fully believing what she just asked me. “Merrick, if you’re going to do this, if there really isn’t any way that I can talk you out of it, then I need to know how I can help and what I can do to make sure that you stay safe.

“You want to help?” I stare at her for a moment then turn to Dimitri and Jared. “Out. We need to talk.”

They disappear and I turn back to Charlotte. She’s staring at me like she can’t quite believe what she just said, which is great, because I’m a little bit in shock, as well. It’s one thing entirely for her to accept my help and agree that listening to me is the best option that she has to make it out of here in one piece, but another entirely for her to willingly offer to help me handle the assholes who want to hurt her.

It’s a bit of a 180 and I can’t quite say that I believe it.

“I want to help,” she confirms, but I shake my head. I’m trying to clear it, trying to make what she’s saying make sense, but it’s really fucking hard right now when she was fighting me tooth and nail just a short period ago for me to let her go. I wasn’t going to let her go then and I’m sure as hell not going to do it now.

It just blows my mind that she would suddenly change how she feels.

“What happened?” I ask, grabbing her neck and lightly squeezing. Her eyes go wide and her breathing gets shallow. I like it. I want her to know that I’m completely in control, no matter what she might think. “Why would you change how you feel so quickly? Why would you suddenly want to help me and stay with me?”

When she doesn’t immediately answer I let go of her neck and shake my head, ready to turn away. Looking at Charlotte makes it really fucking hard for me to think straight and maybe if I get a little space between the two of us, I’ll have an easier time.

“Merrick,” she cries, grabbing my arm and forcing me to turn back around so that I’m looking at her, “listen to me, okay?” Her eyes search my face like she’s looking for any sign of hope there, and when I stand still to listen, she gives a little nod.

“I know that this is insane,” she tells me, and it is, but I don’t agree with her. I want to hear exactly what she’s going to say and interrupting her is only going to piss her off and shut her down. “I know that how we started out isn’t normal. It doesn’t seem like it should work.” She bites her lower lip and then looks up at me. “But there’s something that I have to tell you.”

I know that I should stay quiet and wait for her to come clean with whatever it is that she wants to say, but I can’t.
