Julie sat by Ashley and Markus in the comfy lawn chairs as Deja and Emmett went toe-to-toe with Ava. They’d been at it on and off all day long about Dare helping Ava with the drug problem. Considering Deja and Emmett had come to Dare’s house earlier this morning, she figured those two would’ve headed to work after reaming Ava out. Except they didn’t. Now it was nearing lunchtime, and Zane and Austin were firing up the grill to cook for everyone. Mahone and his girlfriend had borrowed a car and went sightseeing on their own. Julie figured it was more to get away from the tension than actually wanting to see the town more than they already had.

“How long do you think they’re going to argue about this?” Ashley didn’t quite say it in a whisper, but she said it low enough so none of them turned their attention toward them.

Julie had tried one time to say something about the matter, and the look of disgust thrown her way by Deja had her shutting her mouth real quick. She liked Dare. She had no idea if anything would develop between them further—because, despite the way he hurt her this morning, she wanted more. What that more was, she wasn’t exactly sure. And if she wanted more, she wanted his sister to like her. She wouldn’t if she continued to argue for the wrong side.

Honestly, Julie saw both sides of it. She saw the law side where they could put away a bad guy for murdering a single mom looking to better her life. Of course, if it turned out her death was a simple overdose and not murder, then they were getting another drug dealer off the street. She also saw the other side. The side where this could ruin Dare’s life and send him in the opposite direction. That, she didn’t want.

“I imagine it won’t be solved until Dare gives his final say.”

Because in the end, that’s what mattered—what he had to say about it—and so far, he wasn’t a fan of the idea. Ava would lose this battle, and Julie was okay with that. She might’ve been more on Ava’s side in the beginning, but it wasn’t difficult to convert to Dare’s side, especially seeing the way it was affecting him, and he hadn’t even said yes.

“Anyone know where he disappeared to?” Markus asked. Not as quietly as Ashley had. Though no one turned in their direction like Julie feared. They were too engrossed in arguing to pay attention to much else.

“No. He’s not answering his phone.”

She knew he had it with him. The house had been empty of that and his wallet when she did another cursory search for him. She’d left a voicemail along with a few texts, as had Ava, Deja, and Emmett. Even Ethan tried calling, despite being at work today. The only people not in attendance were Sophie and Penelope—who were shopping together in the Cities at a craft fair—and Gabe and Olivia.
