Chapter Twelve

Morning arrived much too quickly for her. She’d spent the night in Mackenzie’s bed, wrapped up in his arms, surrounded by him and his scent. God, she loved the way Mack smelled. All man with a hint of spice from his aftershave.

Sadly she’d had to extricate herself from his hold on her, grab a shower and get a move on to her place for clothing for the day. She’d left him sleeping after saying a goodbye and leaving him a note so he’d remember she had said goodbye that morning. Silly man really wasn’t at his best when he was half asleep. But he was damn cute all rumpled like he’d been.

“You’re looking a little more pleased with yourself,” Chandra commented.

Denise rolled her eyes as she accepted the mug of coffee from her friend. “Why do you say that?” Oh, she was a little more pleased, but she also needed to know what others were picking up on.

“Well, where shall I begin?” Chandra took a chair in front of Denise’s desk, crossed her legs and sipped her coffee.

Knowing a rhetorical question when she heard one, Denise stayed quiet.

“You look relaxed, well rested, happier and there’s a certain...” Chandra waved her hand in a lazy loop. “J’en est c’est quoi.”

“Really?” she asked.

“Yup, best I can come up with at the moment. So, come on, dish!”

She had to laugh at the eager look on Chandra’s face. It was a lot like a kid plastered to the candy store door seconds before opening with forty bucks to blow in her pocket.

“We had dinner last night, Thai if you’re wondering. Talked about nothing much, and laughed. We watched a movie, or rather I watched a movie and he slept with his head in my lap through it all. Then we went to bed, the same bed, and slept wrapped up in one another. I left him sleeping since he didn’t have a surgery until this afternoon. He looked like he needed it.”

Chandra was staring at her with a weird look on her face. “That’s it?”

“What did you expect?”

“That he saw you in his place, tore your clothes off and ravished you on the dinner table maybe,” Chandra said in a rush.

“Oh, God, way too much information,” a male voice intruded.

“Hi, Trent,” Denise said with a grin. She’d spotted him coming but had let Chandra keep going. The blush on Chandra’s cheeks was well worth it.

“Is this what you women talk about when you get together?” he asked.

“Sometimes. Usually only when one of our friends is ignoring a prime example of male perfection that happens to be in her life.” Chandra grinned up at him and batted her lashes. “Hey, how’s Mallory doing these days? I heard that her boss’s second place is up and running now.”

Trent’s face softened into a smile at the mention of his fiancée and soon-to-be wife. “She’s good. Run off her dainty little feet, but good. She’s been splitting her time between Carmelo’s one and two. But we finally have time arranged to get away together so I’m a happy man.
