10.

Sunday. Kolya Sokolov facility, Unknown Location.

Wyatt Boregard had to make a choice. He had the proverbial wolf by the ears and he was beginning to think there was no way for him to extract himself from this situation without getting mauled. He stared out the windows on a landscape covered in green with crystal skies overhead.

Where the hell was he?

The flights they’d used hadn’t been commercial. Wyatt had weathered the last trip sandwiched between crates in a seat barely wide enough for his ass.

Based on the position of the stars he knew they’d gone north. His guess from the few signs he’d seen in the stark building, all of which were in the Cyrillic alphabet, was that they were either in Ukraine or Russia. If he were an international mob boss, he’d be in Ukraine. Too many people were interested in the going and comings from Russia for them to pass without notice.

Vara had sure bitten off more than she could chew this time. He’d known better than to stick with her for this long. She was blessed with too much luck. It was bound to blow up in his face. But the money was too damn good and his family needed it too damn much.

Wyatt had always known Vara had more going on than she shared with the team. She was good, but there were holes in her cover. He’d thought she was American intelligence, which would make sense given to how far they traveled to do business. Most smugglers had a few routes. Vara had twelve. And then there were the handful of small communities between the border and Damascus they always stopped at. The guys always marveled at how she could talk her way into anyone’s home or out of any situation. But Wyatt knew the way women worked. He’d been surrounded by them growing up.

Vara went for the women. The people who spoke her feminine language. The ones who had stories to tell and no one to listen to.

He’d always thought that if they were going to get into trouble, he’d see it coming and could split. Now he knew that was his ego talking.

Voices in the hall drew his attention from the windows. He crossed to the door and listened, watching the handle.

They’d locked him in this bunk room since they arrived. A man brought him meals, and that was it.

No phone calls. No answers. Nothing.

Had anyone called his girls? Did they know?

Mom needed this next check to pay for his sister’s tuition, the mortgage, everything. Without it all their carefully laid plans would go up in flames. They’d get caught in the payday loan cycle again and it would take him months to dig them out again.

The door jostled, and the lock gave way. The door swung inward and two beefy guys stared at Wyatt like they wanted to destroy his jaw.

The feeling was mutual.

The smaller one said something to his partner. The big guy lumbered into the room and grabbed Wyatt by the arm, hauling him out into the hall.
