I startle from my sleep, my heart pounding like a drum. It happens sometimes, shitty dreams from when I was a kid. Only this time, my nerves immediately calm down as I open my eyes and realize that Jax, fully naked, is still nestled in my arms.
His eyes slowly open, and I swear to I’ve never seen anyone look this adorable and sexy all at once. “What happened?” he says.
“You fell asleep. My baby was exhausted.”
He smiles. “I guess so. And your body was so warm, I couldn’t resist passing out in your arms.”
“Yeah, I've been told that before," I say, regretting the moment the words leave my lips. "Wait, that sounded bad."
The truth is, I’ve never felt the way I feel around him with anybody else. But I can’t tell him that, that’d only complicate matters. Make shit more painful. And for what?
“Thanks, Ty,” he says, a look of sadness washing over his gaze as he gets up and starts fishing for his clothes. My breath tightens as I watch him get dressed, wishing I could fly back in time and take back my comment. "How long are you in town for?" he asks, turning the subject on its head.
I consider lying to him at first, but I can't bring myself to do it. "Just a few days. I'm back home to raise money for some local charities here in Boston and to promote my next movie."
His eyes don't change a bit on the outside, but I can feel a shift. "And then what? You fly to the next city to save some other unsuspecting thief from ending up in jail?" he says lightly. Although it doesn't feel light, not at all.
I smirk and run my hands through his hair. It feels like silk as I weave my fingers in and out of it. I take both hands and try to make his bangs stand up straight as a joke. He smiles and grabs my arm, sending a flurry of electricity all the way up it. "I'd hardly say that I saved you. You never needed saving in the first place. Maybe just a little shift in your life's general course of direction, am I right?"
"A little? Compared to what you've done with your life, I couldn't say I that need to find myself a little and not feel like I'm totally full of shit."
I hold his face in my hands and kiss his lips softly. "The money is nice to have, no doubt. But it doesn't mean my life is problem free. It's just one area in my life that I can check off as not having to worry about. You have strengths that I'll never have, trust me."
"Really? And what would those be?" he says. I pull him back into my body. He responds in kind by resting his back up against my bare chest. Fuck, if only this could last…
"That's not up to me to figure out. That's on you, baby boy."
"I'll bet you say that to all of your baby boys," he says.
