Chapter Nine

Dorian

Ocean had fallen asleep in the tub. I lifted her out and laid her on top of a huge towel I’d placed on the bed. I grabbed another towel and dried her body. She was covered in scrapes and cuts from her face to her ankles.

I used the ointment on her cuts and then rolled her onto her front and repeated the same on her back. She had more scrapes and scratches on her back and legs, some still seeping, so I covered those with bandages. She hadn’t budged the entire time. When I was done, I gently transferred her to the other side of the bed and removed the damp towels. I covered her up, tucking in the sides of the blanket hoping she would feel both safe, and secure.

Now what? I went to the kitchen and found the dog lying by the door. I poured her a bowl of water and then pulled a raw steak out of the fridge and cut it up into chunks and placed that in a bowl on the floor for her. She wolfed it down, happily wagging her tail. Later I would have to figure out where she belonged, but for now, I needed to think about my next move. I could call the authorities on the closest island, but what did I have to go on?

A stalker that only I’d seen, and Ocean hadn’t seen him at all. It was weak, and there was no way to prove that he’d been the kidnapper. Darren might be a psychopath, but he was an intelligent psychopath. What we needed was a trap, and I knew just who to ask.

“Hello, Mr. Huxley, what can I do for you today?”

“Hi, Rico, have there been any strange men who came into the resort?”

“No, sir, not since we spoke last, but we did capture him on our security feed stealing from the kitchen after hours.”

“Did you warn the others?”

“I did, sir, and they are on the lookout. If he’d come when we had more security on staff, then we could have captured and detained him. But he came at a shift change.”

Interesting as that meant Darren had been watching the resort and learned its patterns or had breached their infrastructure and stolen the timesheets.

“Has Johnathan arrived yet?”

“Just last night, in fact.”

“Perfect, have him change the security passwords for the system and the network. I have a feeling our guy has broken into the system. Better yet, can I talk to him if he has time?”

“Sure, hold on, and I’ll find him for you.”

Less than a minute later, Johnathan Seagal picked up. “Huxley, I heard you have had some trouble; what’s going on?”

Johnathan had recently become CEO for Alexander Savage whom I’d leased a parcel of property to for La Bella. I liked Johnathan and what the Savage Hotel Chain represented in their resorts. They maintained rigorous standards and didn’t put up with shortcuts that damaged the ecosystem. They were good bedmates for the limited use of the island’s resorts I’d allowed to be built.
