Structural features

Associated with China’s evolving demographic trajectory and policy thrusts are important structural changes, which have become defining features of its social and economic development in the post-Mao era.

The gender ratio

One of the most serious side effects of the one-child policy has been the emergence of an increasingly unbalanced sex ratio, especially in the younger cohorts of the Chinese population. There is no doubt that, because of the traditional preference – for cultural and economic reasons – for boys, from the 1970s family control policies reversed the previous post-1949 trend towards a fairly even distribution of males and females. The outcome was to generate an increasingly serious gender imbalance within China’s population, although there are signs that the gender ratio is now returning towards a more normal level.
