Chapter 4
âGoodness me,â Martha said as she came into the teahouse the next afternoon, âitâs so quiet out there today. Itâs like a ghost town. Where is everyone, Misty?â
âItâs been the same in here for a couple of days, Martha,â I told her. âI think everyoneâs still in shock from what happened the other day. No one seems to be working. I think theyâre all just staying at home.â
âIâm probably still in shock myself,â Martha said. âBring me a cup of that jasmine tea, dear. And maybe a poppy seed muffin.â
For once I was glad that the teahouse was empty, even if it meant I was losing money, and I made myself a cup of tea at the same time as I made Marthaâs and carried it all over to her table where I sat down beside her.
âSo whatâs the latest, Martha?â I asked. âHave you got any news for me today?â
But she just shook her head sadly. âThereâs no one about to learn anything from,â she said. âI know Vince Taylor has been formally charged now, and that the police are quite happy theyâve got the right person. That at least means there wonât be anyone poking around here and disturbing us. But apart from that Iâm just at a loose end. I donât know what to do with myself.â
âWell tell me about Bob Thompkins and Cassandra Short,â I said. âWhat went on with them in the past? I know Bob dumped Cassandra unceremoniously, but thatâs all I know about it. I donât really know any of the details.â
Her little face lit up, and she broke the top off her muffin and split it into a few pieces on her plate.
âCassandraâs very conflicted about what happened to Bob,â she said. âOne the one hand sheâs devastated that heâs gone, but on the other she canât help but feel he got what he deserved. I think she might even be feeling a little bit glad about it all in secret, and thatâs whatâs making her so conflicted. A touch of guilt about it all.â
âSo they used to be engaged?â I asked.
âFrom what I understand,â Martha said. âThis was back when Cassandra lived out east. Bob Thompkins lived in the same area, and as far as Cassandra understood it they were going to be together for life. They were living together, all ready to get married. I think they even had a little business together. Then, right out of the blue, Bob Thompkins took off with another woman and took most of Cassandraâs money with him. Out of the business I think. He was a nasty little man.â
I sighed. âIâm surprised a woman like Cassandra could ever be interested in him in the first place,â I said. âAnd even more surprised a second woman would want to run off with him. What on earth can they possibly have seen in him?â
Martha thought about it for a moment. âMaybe some women just canât resist bright blue,â she said, and we laughed.
âOr little gray mustaches,â I added.
